Movie auditions have but one objective – the right person for the role. Yet, some actors/actresses own their part so well that their names become synonymous with the movie or the character they portray. Here are 10 actors/actresses that were original in their roles.
1. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

One picture that comes to mind with a mention of Ford’s name is a handsome man carrying a gas mask bag with his cowboy hat on. Only it’s not Harrison Ford; it’s Indiana Jones. Very confident of his performance, Ford answered: “No one. I am Indiana Jones,” when asked who should take the role after he retires. That there has been no dispute says it all.
2. Vitto Morgensen as Aragon

Although searching for the ideal Aragon in Lord of the Rings was complicated, Vitto came through on it. And to think that he landed the role over favorites like Stewart Townsend and Nicolas Cage speaks to his ability in this role that became his best-recognized part.
3. Ian McKellen as Gandalf

The layered personality of Gandalf in Lord of the Rings makes the character tough to pull off. But Ian delicately and masterfully depicted the role capturing viewers’ hearts as a sagacious elderly fellow whose scenes act as a guide both to the Frodo-led group and the movie-watching group. Indeed, finesse – not force, does the trick.
4. Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister

Think of a role that changes people’s opinion of you. That’s Lena playing the role of Cersei Lannister in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Unlike her generally perceived personality, she did so well in this role that a critic said: “People didn’t want her autograph at conventions.” Ironically a taste of her quote in one episode: “Power is power.”
5. Andy Serkis as Gollum

Infusing the required emotions in a voice-over is a feat few have mastered. Add to it walking around on all fours for the most part of the shooting. You will understand why Andy Serkis as Gollum was very ‘precious’ (in Gollums’s voice) in bringing the trilogy of Lord of the Rings to life. Although Gollum makes a mess of everything, Andy never made a mess of the act.
6. Brad Pitt as Enzo Gorlomi

One other feat aside from its Director that draws viewers to Inglorious Bastard is Brad Pitt’s performance as Enzo Gorlomi. His Italian accent as an Italian stuntman negates his American roots, redefining versatility.
7. Jack Gleason as Prince Joffrey

It’s still a surprise that fans are friendly to Jack after being the vilest villain as Joffrey Baratheon (second only to Cerci Lannister) in the much-applauded Game of Thrones. Speaking of his audition, another critic said: “It’s absolutely incredible how his entire demeanor shifts in a mere moment from a happy kid joking around to the sinister sniveling sneering of Joffrey.” Many a viewer aren’t privy to his pleasant side. Hence the surprise!
8. Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister

Still on Game of Thrones, Can the book from which the HBO series was adapted be rewritten without the Tyrion character? No. That owes itself chiefly to Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of the role. From an outcast to an arbiter with all sorts in between, his depiction of how size and demeanor belies intelligence and resilience was stunning.
9. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jamie Lannister

Nicolaj’s role as Jamie Lannister sets him up as the older brother to Tyrion. That’s all they have in common. However, he commendably complemented Peter Dinklage in exuding genuine brotherly emotions that viewers forget his shortfalls.
10. Robert Downing Jr. as Stark

After seeing The Avengers, this viewer summed it up nicely: “When your life pretty much, in its own way, parallels the character you’re playing, with the fall from grace, reinvention/rebirth, and then the second act… I don’t think anyone can ever take the place of RDJ as Stark.” Spot on.
