From the outside looking in, it’s easy to glamorize celebrities’ lives. They seem to have it all; the fame, the money, the social capital, the list is endless. However, this is not always the case. Someone on an online community asked about the secret lives of celebrities, away from the glitz and glamour. Here are the replies.

1. Marilyn Monroe

An individual says that despite Marilyn’s wealth of talent and style, she had a difficult childhood and troubled relationships. At nine years old, she moved to an orphanage after her mother was hospitalized for mental health issues. She moved to eleven foster homes during her childhood.

Marilyn was also extremely underpaid in her career. She made a fraction of what her contemporaries like Elizabeth Taylor made. The actress, singer, and model attempted to take her life twice after her husband, Johnny Hyde, passed on and after the death of her unborn child.

2. Eddie Albert

One comment covers the surprising fact that Eddie Albert was not only a circus claw but also a U.S. government spy who tracked Nazi submarines in Mexico. After earning some success on Broadway, the actor joined the Coast Guard to participate in the War Effort.

After a year, he was promoted to a Lieutenancy position in the Naval Reserve. He rescued forty-seven marines by himself and foresaw the rescue of thirty others while the US invaded Tarawa’s land. Later on, he served with another hero, Audrey Hepburn. 

3. Johnny Cash

Did you know that Johnny Cash took seven hundred pills and started a fire in a forest in California (1958)? He had an alcohol and pill addiction and was once so high that he did not notice his hand bleeding, as they recorded. The fire he started in California burned down five hundred acres and killed numerous condors and other birds.

4. Elton John

Elton John is one of the most successful solo artists of all time. However, one forum member says there’s a dark side to this celebrity. They suggest the star was slightly out of control in his younger days. He tried to get a little frisky with his security detail. A former bodyguard complained that Elton groped and sexually harassed him severely.

5. Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. has had a rough life. His father was a drug addict who gave him his first film role at age five. His father also gave him his first marijuana at the age of six. While the Iron Man star once made headlines for troubles with addiction, RDJ is a superstar in recovery with over 15 years sober. 

6. Richard Pryor

Comedy often comes from a dark place. According to one response, comedians tend to have tragic backstories, as seen in the life of Richard Pryor, a reputable comedian.

Throughout his life, he fought addiction, tied the knot seven times, and set himself on fire. He had an abusive childhood after his mother, who worked as a sex worker in his grandmother’s brothel, left him.

7. Audrey Hepburn

Did you know that Audrey Hepburn spent much of her teenage years fighting against the Nazis? The 50s Hollywood icon moved to Holland during the war since her parents thought it was safer from invasion. They were wrong, and Hepburn suffered extreme malnutrition when the Nazis withheld the food supply.

She took part in the ‘black evenings,’ a means for artists under attack from the Nazis to make an income. Hepburn donated her income to the Dutch Resistance and facilitated the hiding of Jews in the Netherlands.

8. Pablo Picasso

According to many, Picasso, the greatest artist of all time, had trouble with many people, especially women. He began an affair with his friend’s girlfriend, Laure Germaine Gargallo Pichot. His friend, Carlos, took his life shortly after. Picasso broke things off with Laure some months later. This is one of many of Picasso’s unfortunate relationships with women.

9. Michael Jackson

The real cause of the star’s death was his obsession with privacy. A responder shares that according to the autopsy report, his feet were seriously damaged due to his dance stunts. He never allowed anyone near his feet, including his doctors. Due to the pain, he self-medicated with painkillers and got hooked. This led to his death when he took excessive anesthetic propofol.

10. Paul Gadd, AKA Gary Glitter

Finally, one notes Gary Glitter was a moderately successful glam rocker in the 70s, but all this faded towards the end of the decade. He made a comeback in the 80s as a live performer. In 1997, he handed his computer to a technician for repair.

His instruction was not to look into the files. The technician ignored this and checked his hard drive, only to find lude child images. Glitter was sentenced to four months in prison. However, he continued with this sick addiction and was arrested multiple times for child violation and living with a minor.
