Many movie adaptations succeed in doing the original work justice. However, a handful stand out for missing the details, which could’ve changed everything. An online community shares ten times films missed out on essential plot twists from the book.
1. I Am Legend (2007)

The entire meaning of the title is left out of the film. “To add, the vampires in the book aren’t just coherent; Neville mistook one for being uninfected and took her in,” comments one. The vampires have developed a medicine that keeps them from being mindless monsters. They are just like humans, except they have to stay out of the sun.
2. Ender’s Game (2013)

In the film, audiences miss the plot thread where Ender’s siblings practically set the world’s agenda via a blog. A viewer was particularly annoyed by the messed up timeline in the movie, glossing over the fact that Ender was in battle school for years. Missing out on this context also deprives viewers of all the strategies and small unit tactics concepts he learned.
3. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

While visually stunning, many find the film doesn’t do justice to the book. Douglas Adams’ humor in the original text is “totally lost in the movie,” comments a viewer. Moreover, the character design fails to match the book’s description. Perhaps this work is best enjoyed when left to the reader’s imagination.
4. The NeverEnding Story (1984)

So much was missed, but what stood out to one reviewer was the distortion of the Childlike Empress. “She lured hundreds of children into her world with her magic book and drained them of their memories of their home, themselves, and their families until they could do nothing but play a game.” They also mention that Atreyu’s horse could talk in the swamp of sadness, “making that scene 500% more upsetting.”
5. The Martian (2015)

One viewer believes that the movie missed the fun, nerdy stuff and the analysis of precisely what went wrong all those times the character nearly died. A scene was also skipped where the crew voted to take cyanide pills if the Chinese booster was unsuccessful.
6. Percy Jackson (2010-2013)

According to one viewer, “If you watched the Percy Jackson movies without reading them, then you missed all the wonder, humor, concepts, and incredible writing.” While the books sucked many into the story, the movies didn’t match the expectations and missed out on things that most readers wished to see.
7. The Wizard of Oz (1982)

Several things are omitted in the film, such as the colored brick roads or the tiger-bear creatures. Furthermore, the movie doesn’t show that the Tin Man had an enchanted axe that caused him to keep chopping off his body and replacing it with a tin prosthetic. Not to mention that they missed how the Wizard ran the long con on all the characters in the book!
8. How To Train Your Dragon (2010-2019)

According to the book, Hiccup gets Toothless, who is tiny. “Like, fits underneath his helmet tiny. And he never gets any bigger — at least so far, and we are on the seventh book now,” comments one. Moreover, Hiccup is never considered a hero, even after saving the village from an evil dragon.
9. Harry Potter (2001-2011)

Many don’t know why Peeves, the poltergeist in the Harry Potter books, wasn’t in the movies. A commenter complains they cut the part where Hermione was the only one in the Wizarding world who thought slavery was wrong, but no one would take her seriously. It turned out that except for Dobby and Winky, all the Hogwarts House Elves were horrified by the idea of freedom.
10. The Shining (1980)

A user finds that the movie misses out on most of what the book is about. While the film is about a family trapped with a man slowly losing his mind due to some unknown force, the book is about a family trapped in a hotel where supernatural stuff negatively affects the father. However, although Kubrick glossed over the book’s entire premise, viewers still think he made a remarkable film.
