From the death of Marilyn Monroe to Area 51, more than a few people believe in conspiracy theories than cold hard facts. For some, it is hard to tell what is real versus fiction. The internet age breathes new life into these ideas, making them seem more credible. When a questioner on an online forum asked which conspiracy theories people believe are accurate, readers provided a lot of oldies but goodies.

1. The Moon Landing Was Faked

One of the longest-running conspiracy theories is that the American moon landing was a Hollywood production created by science fiction movie director Stanley Kubrick. The reason behind this alleged fraud was to give the appearance that the United States was ahead of the then-Soviet Union in the space race.

2. Area 51 and UFOs

The subject of rumors for decades, theorists on the thread claim Area 51 is where the U.S. tests and develops “Intelligence, Surveillance, Tracking and Reconnaissance equipment, and the UFOs are new forms of surveillance equipment.” In truth, it’s a highly classified U.S. Air Force facility where the U-2 and A-12 spy planes were developed and built.

3. Big Pharma

The worldwide pharmaceutical industry earns billions annually, selling treatments for many medical conditions. Their earnings are so vast that some believe the industry keeps consumers sick to keep their profits high.

One of the most pervasive conspiracy theories about big pharma is that they’ve found a cure for cancer but are keeping it under wraps because the disease is profitable.

4. Michael Jordan’s First Retirement

Considered by many to be the most outstanding professional basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan inexplicably retired from the NBA in 1993 after his Chicago Bulls won their third consecutive championship.

Rumors persist that his sudden retirement was to cover up that the NBA suspended him for gambling. In truth, Jordan retired from the NBA after the murder of his father but returned to the league in 1995.

5. The U.S. Shot Down Flight 93 on 9/11

Numerous rumors and conspiracy theories exist about the origins of and masterminds behind the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. Several users claim U.S. military jets shot down United Airlines flight 93 before it crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

6. Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana Were Assassinated

The sudden deaths of Marilyn Monroe in 1962 and Princess Diana in 1997 shocked the world. Monroe died of an overdose, but some online believe the CIA or mafia had her killed. Others believe the British royal family arranged Princess Diana’s fatal car crash because of her perceived disloyalty.

7. The Lost City of Atlantis

At least one contributor on the thread believes the island of Atlantis is one of several “ancient, advanced civilizations lost to history as a result of global cataclysms.” The island continent of Atlantis appears in fictional texts, but there needs to be evidence of its existence.

8. The Assassination of John F. Kennedy Jr.

Despite the Warren Commission’s report that Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy, several contributors believe otherwise. One claims Oswald didn’t act alone, another says the CIA killed him, and a third posits Kennedy’s Secret Service detail accidentally shot him.

9. DNA Test Kits Used for Nefarious Purposes

Home DNA test kits have grown in popularity during the last several years. For some, those home kits are not as innocuous as they appear to be: “I’m still convinced all these DNA test kits will be used/sold as a means to do things like deny medical coverage, plant evidence at crime scenes, population surveillance on a biometric level,” warns one respondent on the forum.

10. D.B. Cooper

In 1971, the infamous hijacker jumped out of an airplane with $200,000 in cash, never to be seen or heard from again. He’s believed to have perished in the jump from the plane, but his body was never found.

Numerous people were suspected of being Cooper, while others have made deathbed confessions claiming to be him. He’s never been identified to date.
