Are you tired of all the same films topping every comedy list? You’ve got company. Someone recently asked Reddit for comedic hidden gems movies that aren’t Airplane!SuperbadTropic Thunder, or the Cornetto trilogy. Here are the top-voted film recommendations.

1. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Assassin Martin Q. Blank (John Cusack) is going through a mid-life crisis. After a failed job, he returns to his hometown, Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

Blank accepts an assignment there and coincidentally also attends his 10-year high school reunion. He tries to win back his old crush but soon discovers that a man is out to kill him.

Best in Show is a behind-the-scenes mockumentary comedy showing the ruthless world of show dog owners. Five show dog owners show up at a national dog show with a film crew to capture the highly competitive world of dog shows. Someone mentioned that after watching the movie, you can “never not laugh” at someone casually saying “busy bee.”

3. Death to Smoochy (2002)

Death to Smoochy is a satirical comedy crime film that stars Robin Williams, Danny DeVito (also the director), and Edward Norton. The story shows a happily corrupt TV host (Williams) who takes bribes from kids’ parents to have them on the show.

He enjoys his life until the FBI does a sting operation, and he gets disgracefully fired. The guy who replaces him, Smoochy (Norton), becomes a rising star.

4. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is the directorial debut of Eric Appel, which he co-wrote with Weird Al Yankovic. The biographical parody is based loosely on the life of Weird Al. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) plays the outsized role of Weird Al, one of the more underrated musicians of our time.

5. The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

When a Coca-Cola bottle falls from the sky, the peaceful lives of a tribe of African bushmen are disturbed. The bottle is dropped from an airplane, but that’s enough to wreak havoc on the traveling bushmen who believe it to be the utensil of the gods.

When Xi (Nǃxau ǂToma ) ventures to return the bottle to the gods, his journey intertwines with a biologist (Marius Weyers), a village school teacher (Sandra Prinsloo), and a band of guerrilla terrorists. The Gods Must be Crazy is a controversial comedy that may not be made today.

6. Idiocracy (2006)

This comedy-sci-fi film follows Joe (Luke Wilson), who is chosen to be the guinea pig of a top-secret hibernation experiment. Private Joe Bauers is the typical average American and the perfect scapegoat for the experiment.

After putting him in hibernation, they forget about him, and when he does wake up, 500 years have passed. Things change when he realizes he is the most intelligent man on the planet.

7. Raising Arizona (1987)

H.I. “Hi” McDunnough (Nicolas Cage) and Edwina “Ed” McDunnough (Holly Hunter) are a childless couple. Hi is an ex-convict, and Ed is an ex-cop. Because of Hi’s criminal past, they cannot adopt a child.

When they decide to help themselves to one of the quintuplets of a wealthy businessman, things get more complicated than they’d ever imagined.

8. Four Lions (2010)

Four young Muslims plan to wage the holy war (Jihad) against Sheffield, where they live. The only problem they have is that they are idiots. Two of the four go to a Pakistani training camp to learn how to kill people. One tries to train birds to carry bombs. Their plan to get martyred and go to heaven culminates at the London Marathon, where they show up in funny costumes.

9. Freebie and the Bean (1974)

Two cops, Freebie (James Caan) and Bean (Alan Arkin), have been tailing a local hijacker for months. When they finally get some evidence to arrest him, they find out a contract killer is out to kill him. So they must act as bodyguards for their suspects until they can procure a warrant.

10. Strange Wilderness (2008)

Jonah Hill is known for his comedies, and even though this movie doesn’t have good ratings from critics, it’s not a bad film, according to Redditors. “It is silly, funny, and doesn’t make much sense, but it will make you laugh.”

The plot follows Cooker, who goes to Ecuador with his friend to find Bigfoot to save his dad’s animal-based TV show.
