I love shows and movies that take place in a courtroom, especially if there’s a witty lawyer, a funny judge, and exciting dialogue. Are you a big fan of courtroom dramas and looking for one to immerse yourself in? This online discussion took off when one moviegoer asked for suggestions, and there were plenty of them to enjoy.
1. My Cousin Vinny (1992)
This movie is a personal favorite of mine, so much so that I saved the DVD even after I got rid of my DVD collection. I often remark that they don’t make movies with such witty dialogue and wordplay as they did with this one. Although this movie is more of a comedy, there is a lot of serious subject matter and intelligent courtroom dialogue.
2. Inherit the Wind (1960)
One viewer called this an “oldie but a goodie.” It is based on the Scopes Monkey Trial, which is a fictionalized account of the trial that took place in 1925. It has received recognition as a “sophisticated film” featuring “impressive performances.”
3. Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Another classic on the list, Witness for the Prosecution, was named a few times. This movie follows the murder of a wealthy widow and the arrest of an unemployed inventor. One comment called out one of the actor’s performances, saying, “Billy Wilder is amazing in any genre.”
4. A Time to Kill (1996)
With a cast of highly-esteemed actors, this film tells an important story involving a heartbroken father who seeks justice for his young daughter. This movie is based on John Grisham’s novel of the same name.
5. Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
This movie has been named “a foundation stone of the classic courtroom drama” and features a challenging case represented by a charming attorney, Jimmy Stewart. You will likely enjoy the twists and turns as the ensemble seeks to find the truth behind the allegations.
6. Jagged Edge (1985)
If you’re looking for a courtroom film that will surprise you with twists and turns, this movie is for you. Starring Glenn Close as a trial attorney and Jeff Bridges as the man on trial, Jagged Edge has plenty of tension and drama.
7. 12 Angry Men (1957)
Although it has been decades since its release, this film has recently been said to be “as endlessly rewatchable and relevant as it ever was.” The film has a 5-star, 100% rating on Rotton Tomatoes and has plenty of great reviews if you want to spoil the story for yourself.
8. Flash of Genius (2008)
Greg Kinnear stars in this movie as Robert, who comes up with an idea for a particular type of windshield wiper. This invention leads to a stressful legal battle between him and the automotive industry.
9. A Few Good Men (1993)
This film is quite famous for its star-packed cast and incredible screenplay by Aaron Sorkin. Jack Nicholson is just one of the highly respected actors in the movie. It also received nominations for four Academy Awards.
10. Liar Liar (1997)
This movie isn’t necessarily the most serious on the list, but I still think it deserves an honorable mention. Although it strives to be more of a comedy, it’s a fascinating film about a lawyer who suddenly cannot lie. This problem turns his life upside down in quite a few humorous ways.
