10 Popular Films That Hollywood Learned the Exact Wrong Lesson From

Some cinematic hits are popular for incorporating unique elements that grab the audience’s attention. However, their success is taken too superficially as many studios attempt to mimic the techniques in the worst possible way. Here are ten films from which members of an entertainment forum think Hollywood learned the wrong lesson.

1. The Bourne Identity 2002

The Bourne franchise introduced novel camera tricks and filming techniques, granting it incredible success. However, the shaky cam for action scenes is not to be overdone. When used effectively, it creates an immersive impact. However, many think its overuse is “migraine-inducing” but “in a Cloverfield kind of way.”

2. When Divergent (2014-2016) Diverges

Many films tried to divide the last part of a series into two movies. While that may have worked for Harry Potter, it was a complete failure for the Divergent franchise. A viewer notes, “It was hilarious when Divergent did that and never released part two of the last movie. They really thought people were clamoring for as much Divergent as they could get.”

3. The Dark Tower (2017): Lost Potential

While worldbuilding is necessary for compelling storytelling, not every studio must create its cohesive cinematic universe like Marvel to succeed. While many feel that The Dark Tower may fall prey to becoming unnatural, one believes that Mike Flanagan can deliver a good Stephen King adaptation.

4. Avatar (2009): Visual Wonders

Avatar truly changed how CGI and visual effects can be utilized in films. Seeing its vast success, Hollywood made nearly every movie in 3D for several years, but none of them could come close to what Avatar had already delivered.

5. The Dark Knight (2008)

The Batman franchise introduced lighting techniques (or lack thereof) that made the cinematic viewing experimentation. The low lighting helped capture Gotham’s somber atmosphere. However, The Dark Knight’s success didn’t mean “we had to get darker, grittier versions of Superman, Spider-Man, Power Rangers and The Ninja Turtles.”

6. Die Hard (1988-2013): Aimless Action

While the first movie was a massive success, the creators somehow inferred that people only liked seeing Bruce Willis get into action. In the process, “they skipped the part where he’s a human being who has doubts, gets hurt, and suffers anguish.” Things inevitably got boring when later movies turned him into an invulnerable superhero.

7. Batman (1989): Troublesome Trendsetter

Batman strikes again as this film’s success compelled studios to think that audiences must be crazy for pulp comic heroes from the ’30s. Suddenly, viewers got Dick Tracy, The Shadow, and The Phantom and weren’t excited about it.

8. The Modified Mulan (2020)

Understandably, previously stereotypical female characters are now being rewritten to be empowered individuals. However, Hollywood films often suggest that a female main character must have an innate superpower that she’s been suppressing the whole time instead of improving along the story. In the original 1998 Mulan, she was just an average girl who learned with her head to overcome her challenges, but the live-action movie took away this feature.

9. Spiderman: No Way Home (2021) ‘s Cameo Conundrum

After the success of No Way Home and Marvel’s exciting post-credit scenes, Hollywood believed cameos alone could make a movie good. These surprise celebrity features only add to the experience if existing content and acting are engaging to begin with.

10. Deadpool (2016)

The Deadpool franchise had a meta approach that was unique and well-fitting. However, with its success, many feel that pop culture has adapted the “wink-wink self-awareness in a pretty unbecoming way.” Breaking the fourth wall works well when suited to the character’s narrative, as was the case for Deadpool, an anti-hero.
