So many movie plot cycles include the protagonist changing their identities and appearance, a form of rebirth. A recent online discussion shares film lovers’ choices for epic character makeovers.

“The best one because she did it for herself. And she emphasized her curly hair instead of making it straight and perfectly neat, unlike most of these,” explains a fan of the comedy. “I’m Greek with curly hair as well, so this always makes me happy.” The ugly duckling narrative works well for this cute, wholesome comedy flick.

2. Clueless (1995)

“This one was so cute and realistic!” says a commenter who remembers the ‘90s well. “I remember that being my favorite makeover as a kid.” She still looked like her, and they didn’t straighten her hair.” Anyone who enjoys a makeover movie will love the timeless classic, Clueless.

3. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

“A slightly more polished Hathaway with a little makeup and hair, wearing a collegiate tee-shirt at the end of The Devil Wears Prada was by far her best look,” says a complimentary fan. The movie showcases Hathaway’s unique ability to reinvent her character. The Devil Wears Prada is the ultimate makeover movie.

4. The Breakfast Club (1985)

John Hughes’ cult high school Brat Pack movie features a mute, quirky back-of-the-classroom character who gets a makeover from one of the movie’s homecoming queen characters. “I usually love makeovers, but I remember being so disappointed the first time I saw the movie,” writes a non-fan. “It was a huge step-down,” others agree.

5. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

Robin Williams transformed into a kind Scottish grandmother to try and keep in contact with his children after his wife divorced him. Although we naturally side with the protagonist, many people in the thread have other ideas. “I have a love-hate (relationship) with this movie,” says a critic. “It’s funny and classic, but as I get older, I am so mad for Miranda. She was right, and he made her out to be so crazy and mean.”

6. Batman Returns (1992)

Michelle Pfeiffer got men purring when Tim Burton’s early-nineties Batman sequel was released. “I don’t know about you, Miss Kitty, but I feel so much yummier,” jokes a fan of the O.G. Catwoman, quoting her character.

She’s All That is so funny, especially after the Not Another Teen Movie spoof on it,” posts the next commenter. “It really was the classic case of ‘she’s already hot, but if we undid the ponytail and took the glasses off, now she’s hotter.’” Let’s give the movie its dues; it is a modern tribute to My Fair Lady, I will have you know.

When tomboy detective Gracie Hart has to go undercover at the 75th annual Miss United States beauty pageant, she must tame her natural tomboy and blend in with her glamorous surroundings. “I’m starved, and I’m armed,” quotes a Sandra Bullock devotee, “don’t mess with me.”

Kristen Stewart made girls everywhere jealous of her love affair with Robert Pattinson, especially after she became like him. However, some diehards don’t like how they portray her. “I still stand by thinking they should’ve recast her for vampire Bella,” says a Twilighter. “I mean, Kristen Stewart absolutely killed it, and in that sense, no one else could ever be Bella, but in the books, Meyers specifically talks about how drastic the vampire transformation is.”

10. Moonstruck (1987)

Cher won an Oscar for her performance in this introspective, late-eighties romantic drama, and her self-makeover scene is key. “My personal favorite,” claims a Cher fan. “The makeover scene in Moonstruck is so intimate. Loretta does it for herself and discovers something beautiful — her powerful femininity.”
