1. Google+ vs. Facebook
If you’re ancient enough, you probably remember how Google+ was supposed to topple Facebook. Unfortunately, the product was excellent in this case, but the marketing was flawed.
A member observes: “They had one week where everyone was super excited about it and wanted to try it, and they limited it to invite-only. Very few people could get in. By the time they opened it up to everyone, nobody cared anymore.”
2. 3D TV: Repetitive Failure
Who can forget the time when 3D TV was all the rage? Many mention how 3D failed five or six times in the last fifty years. “Every time it is presented as ‘next big thing,’ every time it fails,” observes one. They speculate that 3D movies will never work because having to wear glasses to enjoy is an added element that people feel isn’t worth the annoyance.
3. Segway Scheming
Segways failed as it was underestimated how much cities are designed for cars, especially in America, shares one user. The unwillingness to change this makes segways impossible. Another person says, “Can’t even get pedestrians, bicycles, and cars to play nice with each other, let alone something like a Segway.”
4. Windows Phone: A Case of Bad Aging
When the Windows Phone came out, Microsoft held a literal funeral procession for the iPhone. Unfortunately, this is something that aged poorly, hilariously so. One user mentioned how they loved their Windows Phone but got into it too late, so the support was nearly dead. Many thought the tiles were tremendous and intuitive.
5. Quibi: Bad Idea, Bad Execution
Right before COVID, Quibi introduced the concept of quick shows you could watch on the go exactly when people weren’t going anywhere. It was not only the timing that was bad but also the idea. “Like, Katzenberg was convinced people would watch them in line for coffee? Who would watch a television show that way?” Besides, YouTube already existed.
6. The Tata Nano
It’s incredible how the company set out to build the lowest price new car in the world and succeeded in doing so. However, sales didn’t come close to expectations as the newly middle-class Indian families didn’t want the stigma of owning the world’s cheapest new car.
7. Ostrich: The New Chicken
About twenty-five years ago, ostrich meat was believed to be as popular as chicken. One person mentions how their Australian coworker said they go through the same thing every twenty years or so, where it is thought that Kangaroo meat will replace beef. All these schemes fail because cows and chickens are docile compared to ostriches and kangaroos.
8. NFTs: A Financial Fiction
The concept is unclear to many. One person says their brain starts thinking about “Pigeons on a skateboard” whenever someone tries to explain NFTs to them. Another member remarks that the whole scheme seemed designed from the outset to be nothing but a bubble.
9. Zune vs. iPods
A member acquired three Zunes over the years and found that all were superior to their contemporary iPods. The only problem was that the Zune was just “four years too late to the party.” At that point, iPod had already captured the market, and a better product wasn’t enough to break Apple’s monopoly.
10. Kony 2012
Many anticipated the African warlord to gain immense popularity. However, the person running the campaign had a breakdown at a crucial moment, and the scheme floundered severely. It is rumored that Kony is now hiding in poor health.
