12 Movies So Amazing They Deserved a Sequel But Sadly Never Got One

Sometimes a movie is robbed of a sequel. No matter how well made or how good of a job it does at setting up the follow-up, nothing more comes of it.

A recent online discussion asks what movies deserved a sequel but never got one. Here are the top responses.

Despite the quality of the Karl Urban film, nothing materialized beyond its release. Urban wanted to do another one, but since the film bombed at the box office, nothing came of it.

We’re supposedly getting a follow-up to the 2005 superhero film starring Keanu Reeves. However, we’ll hold our breath until we see it happen. We don’t want to get our hopes up. It’s been almost two decades, and there’s been nothing yet.

One of the plots in the classic Melbrooks film is Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money

Rumor has it that Brooks and Rick Moranis discussed a sequel, which would have been called Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II, but nothing ever came of it.

Brooks recently released History of the World: Part 2 on Hulu.

One moviegoer states, “I’m reading the books through again, and there [is] so much depth to the characters that was left untouched (and appropriately so, not sure how you’d pack Stephen’s intelligence work or Jack’s ineptitude in domestic affairs into that story).”

Everyone would have loved a sequel to the popular sci-fi comedy, but with the death of Alan Rickman, I wouldn’t count on that happening ever.

Big Hero 6

While we saw a television series following the release of the Disney film, many feel like it’s not the same as a full-fledged movie sequel.

District 9

It’s been long rumored that Neil Blomkamp, writer and director of District 9, has plans for a sequel.

However, he’s currently working on the Gran Turismo movie.

Based on the cult-classic television series Firefly, fans are desperate for more content in the Firefly universe.

“Went into this knowing nothing of Firefly or what the movie even was about,” said one fan. “…loved it!! The world was interesting, and the characters were captivating. Loved it all.”

John Carter

Despite failing at the box office, possibly due to its generic name, John Carter is a fantastic sci-fi adventure, and it’s a shame we’ll never see the rest of the story on film.

The surprise 2019 cyberpunk action hit from James Cameron (writer and producer) resonated with fans. With a box office earning of $405 million, it’s the highest-grossing film ever directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Sadly, Cameron’s too preoccupied with Avatar to work on a sequel.

Warcraft

Based on the popular video game franchise, Warcraft told the story from the original game. Sadly, the 2016 film by Duncan Jones didn’t resonate with moviegoers.

Many fans are hopeful that one day we’ll see a big-screen adaptation of popular Warcraft villain Arthas Menethil, the Lich King.

The Other Guys

The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy, directed by Adam McKay, may not have the same mainstream appeal as other Ferrell films. Still, it has fans, and people are hopeful we’ll see a sequel one day.

If Daddy’s Home got a follow-up, why not The Other Guys?
