Activision Blizzard announced today during an earnings report that a mobile warcraft game will release later this year.
This is not the first time Blizzard Entertainment would release a mobile game. Diablo Immortal, best known for its infamous reveal during BlizzCon 2018, is also set to release later this year.
According to a press release, we learn that “Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.” The last part of that quote is what is most important. The “all-new” means we’re not getting Hearthstone or (most likely) World of Warcraft related content. This is something brand spanking new from the Warcraft franchise.
Very little is known about the mobile Warcraft title at this time. The investor report mentions the following:
In our Warcraft franchise, we intend to deliver more frequent premium content to sustain and expand the World of Warcraft community and we’ve made multiple mobile free-to-play Warcraft experiences and they’re now in advanced development, based on our franchise’s beloved IP. This will create opportunities for both existing players and new fans to experience the Warcraft universe in entirely new ways.Source: Activision Blizzard
Blizzard’s careers page does list several mobile-related positions for an unannounced project. I would be shocked if this wasn’t more than a coincidence.
World of Warcraft is no stranger to mobile apps. The game used to feature a mobile application that allows people to post auctions and talk in guild chat. It was something that I loved dearly and miss; please let me post auctions on my phone.
Blizzard has been pretty announcement happy recently when it comes to World of Warcraft. I’m sure we will hear more about the mobile Warcraft project very soon.
I do have a phone, Blizzard! I want to use it!
