After successfully becoming a Pokémon Champion, many wondered what the next Pokémon series would have in store for Ash Ketchum. This morning, The Pokémon Company told us what’s on the horizon: the end of Ash’s journey. As the series looks forward to a new story with new characters, it’s time to say goodbye to the ones that started it all.

A trailer on the Pokémon YouTube channel recaps Ash’s adventure from its humble beginnings. “Ash and Pikachu have had many encounters,” it says, “many battles, and many exciting and memorable times.” But, unfortunately, it seems that those times are nearing an end.

As Ash ventures toward becoming a Pokémon Master, the new Pokémon series will start the final chapter in Ash and Pikachu’s story. Espidoes begin airing in Japan Friday, January 13th, 2023. A total of 11 episodes will air as we say goodbye to Ash, Pikachu, and everyone else we have watched for over two decades.

“It’s been an extraordinary privilege to have been the English voice of Ash Ketchum for what will be 17 years,” said Sarah Natochenny, Ash Ketchum’s English voice actor. “No matter what lies beyond his final chapter, he’ll live forever in the hearts of many generations to come. I’ll keep him present for all of us in every way I can.”

While The Pokémon Company was mum on what we can expect to see in these final episodes, the trailer gives us glimpses. Gary Oak and Misty appear in the trailer, as do Pidgeot and Butterfree. Primeape is also seen on a promotional poster, indicating that Ash is returning home to see his old friends one last time. Brock is expected to appear as well.

What’s In Store For The New Pokémon Series

With the departure of Ash and company, a new cast of characters will take the mantle of the Pokémon animated series moving forward.

Details are currently scarce other than a brief teaser. Set to air in April, the new protagonists for the Pokémon animated show are Liko and Roy. In addition, the Pokémon starters from the Paldea region featured in Scarlet and Violet are in the teaser.

Currently, the official description for the new Pokémon adventure is as follows:

“Join 2 new characters and 3 Paldea starter Pokémon as they adventure through the Pokémon world!”

The new series’ region, antagonists, or other plot points are currently unknown. However, recent video games in the series have brought more open world elements to the formula. So it’s possible that the new series can use this to its advantage. Recent games have also introduced new Pokémon, gym leaders, antagonists, and more.

Recapping The Year That Was For Pokémon

There was more happening in the world of Pokémon beyond the animated series. 2022 may have been the Pokémon franchise’s biggest year. The Nintendo Switch saw two games released: Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

While it wasn’t perfect, we enjoyed our time with Legends: Arceus. Our review said that “the franchise has the breath of fresh air it so desperately needs, resulting in enjoyable and addictive gameplay in the wild of the Hisui region.”

Sadly, we didn’t feel the same way about Scarlet and Violet. “There are some good ideas within Pokémon Scarlet and Violet,” we said, “but they cannot overcome the critical game issues.”

This year’s highlight was undoubtedly when Ash Ketchum became Pokémon World Champion in the Pokémon animated series.

“Ash Ketchum’s determination and perseverance to achieve his goal of becoming the world’s top Pokémon Trainer over the course of 25 seasons represents the very best of what it means to be a Trainer,” said Taito Okiura, VP of marketing for The Pokémon Company International on the accomplishment. “We cannot wait to celebrate this moment with Pokémon fans when the newest season of ‘Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series’ and this adventure-defining episode air around the world in the coming year.

A collaboration with PUMA was also announced, featuring clothing and apparel.
