Playstation’s answer to GamePass finally hit North America on June 13th. While the full list of PS Plus Premium games available falls short of GamePass’s day one first-party release lineup, there are still a ton of great titles to enjoy.
PS Plus’s lowest tier delivers two PS4 games and one PS5 game a month. And for a while now those games have been leaving something to be desired from the Sony faithful.
PS Plus premium adds over 100 games ready to download with some top-tier titles ready to enjoy on day one.
The heavy hitters
Sony has told us time and again not to expect day-one first-party releases on PS Plus Premium. With the mega-success of titles like God of War and The Last of Us PT: 2, it’s not hard to understand why.
Even though we won’t be seeing God of War Ragnarök on day one on the PS Plus Premium game list, there are still a ton of great AAA games available on the service.
Ghost of Tsushima: Directors Cut
Ghost of Tsushima: Directors cut is not only a fantastic update to the PS4’s swan song, but it’s also one of our favorite and best Samurai games. Ghost of Tsushima is the magnificent story of Jin Sakai’s fight against the first Mongol invasion of Japan.
The Director’s cut includes Jin’s open-world tale as well as all the Island of Iki DLC and the Legends multiplayer mode.
You can easily sink 100 hours into this game without ever getting bored.
Spiderman: Miles Morales
Spiderman Miles Morales is the tightly packed follow-up to Insomniacs’ stellar Spiderman released in 2018. Released just two years after the original, Mile Morales was a must-have PS5 launch title and is now available on PS Plus premium for no extra charge.
If you’re lucky enough to have snagged a PS5, Miles Morales is a stellar showcase for the hardware. The Raytracing and 60 fps mode on PS5 is a thing of beauty.
Not to mention the fun gameplay, great story, and phenomenal voice acting.
Red Dead Redemption 2
The painstaking lengths Rockstar went to in order to recreate the American Wild West are seen all over this game. Red Dead Redemption 2 lacks some of the mindless fun of its big brother GTA 5, but it makes up for it with immersive storytelling and addicting gunplay.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a fantastic game and something to hold you over until Rockstar finally releases GTA 6.
Hidden gems
There are more big titles available on PS Plus Premium, but there’s also a plethora of hidden gems. The games you may have missed the first time around. GamePass has been successful not just for its Day one AAA titles, but also for bringing a ton of smaller indie titles into the spotlight. Let’s hope PS Plus Premium can do the same.
Medievil
A ground-up remake of a 1998 original Playstation exclusive that received mixed reviews seems like a gamble, but boy did Sony knock this one out of the park. The remake stays true to the original hack and slash formula while updating graphics and gameplay for modern consoles.
There’s a reason we consider MediEvil one of the best zombie games ever made, and now it’s more accessible than ever.
Celeste
Extremely OK Games
Celeste is a game starring trans protagonist Madeline, and her struggle to climb Celeste mountain.
The game is a punishing 2D platformer with a beautiful pixel art style. The platforming and trial and error gameplay will get you hooked, but the push to get Madeline to overcome her anxieties will make you stay.
Celeste is a game that sticks with you long after the credits roll. It’s an important game that causes you to think about your struggles and powers you to overcome them. It also features one of the best soundtracks of all time.
There just aren’t enough words to sing Celeste’s praises. We love Celeste, and we know you will too.
Telling Lies
Telling Lies is Sam Barlows’ follow-up FMV to his surprise hit Her Story. You play as an unnamed protagonist with access to an NSA surveillance database. On this database, you can search keywords that give you access to one-half of a video call. You’ll be able to see one side of the conversation and from there piece together the story by finding the other half of the call, or using the information you just learned to search more keywords.
It’s not hyperbole to say Telling Lies is a storytelling masterpiece. The way Sam Barlow engineered these conversations between four people, leaving you enough breadcrumbs to continually suss out the story is a work of brilliance.
Telling Lies is not like most FMV games. The acting is superb, the story is engaging, and the gameplay is truly innovative. Please, don’t miss this one.
