Last night was The Game Awards for 2021. With it came a slew of announcements, trailers, and gameplay debuts. While a lot more happened beyond what’s reported below, let’s recap the highlights.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade Ii
Hellblade II got an impressive gameplay display during The Game Awards. After its debut at the 2019 show, it’s been a long two year wait to for another look. There was no word on a release date as of yet, but the platforms were confirmed to be Xbox Series X|S, PC, and xCloud.
Star Wars Eclipse
The debut trailer for Star Wars Eclipse made a grand entrance. Now in “early development,” the upcoming game from developer Quantic Dream takes place in the High Republic.
Wonder Woman
Speaking of debut trailers, another teaser was up next. Wonder Woman is in development from Monolith Productions, the team behind Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
Alan Wake 2
Another trailer from The Game Awards, another teaser. This one for a game we’re already familiar with, though. Alan Wake 2 is the sequel from the horror action-adventure from 2010. Remedy Entertainment Creative Director Sam Lake did confirm, though, that the sequel will be a survival horror game.
Nightingale
Inflexion Games is a new studio founded by former BioWare GM Aaron Flynn. Their first game, Nightingale, is a shared-world survival and crafting title. It’s also a PC exclusive and Flynn isn’t the only BioWare vet on staff. The team is filled with former members of the fabled Edmonton studio. It will be in early access in 2022.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a “story-driven action-adventure” game from Daedalic Entertainment. It will release next year for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Cuphead – The Delicious Last Course
Two years after its original announcement The Game Awards 2021 brought us a release date for Cuphead’s upcoming DLC. A solid 3 years after it was originally due, but patience will be rewarded.
Sonic the Hedgehog – Movie Trailer, Game Debut
Sonic made not one but two appearances at The Game Awards. The debut trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 showcased Sonic, Robotnik, Tails, and Knuckles in live-action.
As for the game? Sonic Frontiers promises an open-world environment for our favorite hedgehog to explore. We’ll see whether or not that pans out, though.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
The upcoming Suicide Squad game saw its gameplay debut at The Game Awards. As expected, it was filled with personality and style, but we’ll see if that translates to hands-on action when it releases in 2022.
Halo the Series
After a brief tease last month, we got our first real look at the upcoming Halo TV series on Paramount+. Pablo Schreiber stars as Master Chief, Natascha McElhone as Dr. Halsey, and Jen Taylor as Cortana.
