10 Smart Comedies That For Once Don’t Rely on a Ridiculously Dumb Plot For Cheap Laughs

Are you tired of comedies with stupid plotlines and potty humor? You’ve got company. Someone recently polled a popular online movie forum for recommendations of comedy films that aren’t dumb humor. Here are the top-voted films.

1. The Nice Guys (2016)

The Nice Guys is a classic that brings back buddy comedies with a bang. A down-on-his-luck private eye (Ryan Gosling) reluctantly teams up with a hired enforcer (Russell Crowe) to find a woman who mysteriously disappears. As they uncover secrets, they discover that anyone involved with the woman winds up dead.

2. In Bruges (2008)

Martin McDonagh (the director) does a great job of casting Colin Farrell as Ray, a hitman who goes to hide out in Belgium with his hitman friend, Ken (Brendan Gleeson).

Farrell is a great comedian, and he does a spectacular job of portraying a grim guy who encounters surreal experiences in the medieval city and ends up falling in love. His character makes all the jokes funnier, and the movie has a great story, according to several in the thread.

3. Midnight Run (1988)

Robert De Niro’s character, Jack Walsh, a tight-lipped bounty hunter, is hired by Eddie Moscone (Joe Pantoliano) to locate a mob accountant (Charles Grodin). However, he later finds out that the mob and the FBI are eager to get their hands on “The Duke” (Grodin’s character).

He must escape the authorities and, more importantly, prevent The Duke’s crazy personality from driving him mad. The chemistry and conversations between those two are what makes this film great.

4. Game Night (2018)

Game Night is a super fun-to-watch, clever, and funny movie with a great plot. Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) do a game night weekly with their friends at their house. 

One night Max’s brother, Brooks, arranges a murder mystery party, and things turn real. But unfortunately, the fake thugs and federal agents turn out to be real, and Brooks gets kidnapped. 

So game night takes several unexpected and chaotic turns and ends with a final twist. One stated, “It’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience.”

5. I Love You, Man (2009)

Starring Paul Rudd, this movie has a simple premise, but it’s hilarious until the very end, according to many. When Rudd’s character, Peter Klaven, can’t find the best man for his wedding, he goes on a series of “mandates.”

He meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), with whom he develops so strong a “bromance” that he must now choose between his fiancee and Fife.

6. Four Lions (2009)

Several suggested this comedy is hilarious with a relatively good story. Four Muslim men living in England decide to wage holy war (jihad) and become martyr bombers. The only problem is that they are foolish and don’t seem to be able to blow themselves up.

7. Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day is comedic with an intelligent storyline. Phil (Bill Murray) is trapped in a time warp and reliving the same day, seemingly forever. He realizes that he must change certain things and get them right to make the loop stop. One noted, “Many movies after this took inspiration from the time-loop idea.”

8. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Many volunteered Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) is known as the boyfriend of famous TV star Sarah Marshall and is struggling with his music career.

When Sarah dumps Peter for her new boyfriend, Aldous (Russell Brand), he feels lost and tries to get over her by going on a trip to Hawaii. But he finds that Sarah and Aldous are in the same hotel he is staying in, and things become hilariously awkward. 

9. The Big Lebowski (1998)

Redditors agree that The Big Lebowski is hilarious. There are two Jeff Lebowskis in this movie. One is a millionaire whose wife owes a lot of dangerous people a lot of money, and the other is a laid-back, easygoing burnout.

Unfortunately, when the creditor mistake burnout Jeff to be millionaire Jeff, he is sent spiraling down into the Los Angeles underworld.

10. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Finally, The Royal Tenenbaums was voted a funny film to watch. Royal and Etheline Tenenbaum have three children who are all geniuses. But, unfortunately, two decades later, all memory of the brilliance of the Tenenbaums is wiped off after much betrayal, failures, and disasters.

Most of this is considered to be Royal’s fault. However, things take a funny and unexpected turn with the family’s sudden reunion one winter.
