Does the upcoming Far Cry 6 have multiplayer? That’s the big question that fans of Ubisoft’s freedom-fighting franchise are asking. The latest entry arrives three years after the previous game, bringing with it a new hero, a recognizable villain in Giancarlo Esposito’s Antón Castillo, and a plethora of new additions. With all that considered, is a PvP multiplayer mode one of the new arrivals in Far Cry 6? Let’s find out.
Is There Multiplayer in Far Cry 6?
Bad news for multiplayer fans: Far Cry 6 doesn’t have a dedicated multiplayer mode. That means you won’t be able to play in PvP deathmatches with friends, or take part in other competitive online events. However, while there isn’t a traditional multiplayer mode, Far Cry 6 does include two-player co-op.
While a PvP multiplayer mechanic isn’t included in Far Cry 6, there is a small amount of online functionality. You’re able to tackle the campaign with one other friend in tow, meaning co-operative play is included. You can drop in and out of a friend’s story mode at any time, wreaking havoc together, or completing missions. Just remember that this isn’t a bona fide multiplayer experience like you’d see in franchises such as Call of Duty. There’s no matchmaking, game modes, or progression – just the chance to play the story together.
Of course, it’s better than nothing. Co-op story mode has been in the Far Cry franchise since Far Cry 3 in 2012. While it’s a fun addition, it does mean that Ubisoft hasn’t tried anything new with Far Cry‘s multiplayer this time around. Interestingly, other Ubisoft franchises have had forms of PvP multiplayer, while Far Cry still goes without. Both the Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed games have experimented with PvP – though none of these modes are vastly populated today. The hit-or-miss nature of Ubisoft’s previous attempts may have contributed to its omission in Far Cry 6.
As such, it means you can only play with one other friend, as you progress through the story mode. No deathmatches or battle royale. Instead, you and a friend can take down an evil dictator together cooperatively.
