Double Fine Wraps Up Psychonauts 2 Production, Looks to the Future

Double Fine, the developer of Pyscohanuts 2, posted an update on their crowdfunding blog regarding plans for the studio.

“Psychonauts 2 has essentially wrapped up as a project, although there will be tweaks and fixes as we move forward,” the post from Double Fine said.

“The studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll enjoy. We like experimentation here at Double Fine. Every game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual styles or gameplay, emotions, and more. Psychonauts 2 was a chance to revisit and reimagine the classic that launched our studio into the future. It was a long process but we like to think the pay off was pretty great. We stuck the landing.”

Psychonauts was first announced at the 2015 Game Awards show. Originally, it was a crowdfunded title through the website Fig, raising nearly $4 million. An additional $8 million came in from publisher Starbreeze, known for Payday 2 and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. It had a rocky development time, as the game’s initial release window of 2018 would be missed.

Starbreeze would also fall into bankruptcy.

Eventually, Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019. Psychonauts 2 was released as a game published by Xbox Games Studios.

Tim Shafer, the founder of Double Fine, spoke earlier this year about what he wants to see from their next game.

“There was a period at the end of Psychonauts 2 where we had all hands on deck to finish the game, but we’re definitely going back to multiple projects afterward. Until it happens again? Who knows? We don’t have any rules about that but we’re set up to have multiple projects and we have enough ideas to do that.”

“I think the team and I are really excited about doing something completely new that will be completely surprising to people.
