Dwayne Johnson first became a worldwide phenomenon as the WWE’s Heavyweight Champion in the late 1990s. His massive physique and winning charm eventually led him into the acting world. These days, he is quite possibly the biggest movie star in the world.
The Rock’s look makes him a perfect fit to portray characters based on video games. During a recent interview, Men’s Journal asked the actor, “You’ve had a long history with Microsoft and the Xbox. Do you have any plans to bring video game characters to the big screen?”
“I’ve always been a big Madden fan,” Johnson responded. “I can’t tell you which game, in particular, we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course, we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really, we’re just going to make a great movie.”
Johnson certainly has a history in adapting games into huge films. The first instance of this was Doom. In the 2005 picture, the Rock played Sarge, the leader of a group of Marines who goes on a mission to Mars in the year 2026. The movie grossed $58 Million.
The Rock’s second stab at a prominent video game property was 2018’s Rampage. Based on the 1986 arcade game, Johnson plays a former soldier who is now a primatologist and anti-poaching unit head. Rampage was a much more significant hit than Doom, grossing $428 Million at the box office.
Johnson also has some experience lending his voice to games like the second and third chapters of Fortnite.
