EA has announced the creation of Cliffhanger Studios and announced its first project – a Black Panther game. The new AAA studio is based in Seattle and is working on a third-person single-player take on the popular Marvel property. The news comes after EA announced that Motive Studios is working on an Iron Man game.
Cliffhanger Studios was first announced in 2021 when EA stated their intent to form a new studio led by Kevin Stephens, the former VP and studio head of Monolith Productions. The studio has assembled a team of industry veterans who have worked on properties including Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, and God of War.
Stephens went on to say that the creation of Cliffhanger Studios is built on the “values of diversity, collaboration, and empowerment.” He also acknowledged the huge responsibility of adapting such a well-known and important hero.
“We want our game to enable players to feel what it’s like to be worthy of the Black Panther mantle in unique, story-driven ways, and we want Cliffhanger Games to empower everyone on our team as we collaborate to bring this amazing world to life,” he said.
“We’re still early in development with a long road ahead, but we know the foundation to any great story is to build an experienced team with diverse voices and perspectives, and that’s what we want to build, especially with a superhero as important as Black Panther.”
With the relative failure of Crystal Dynamics Marvel’s Avengers game looming over the Marvel video game adaptations, the pressure is definitely on Cliffhanger Studios.
