Elden Ring Gurranq Questline | Full Walkthrough

Elden Ring Gurranq Questline Bestial Sanctum

While there are plenty of allies to make in Elden Ring, there are only so many mentors. Teachers of magic, trading you secrets for power. And only one NPC offers you this power in such a straightforward way. The Beast Clergyman Gurranq is the only way to access the Strength-based incantations called Beast Incantations. Gurranq has a questline in order to collect all of these impressive spells. Whether you want to find him, or want to know the locations of his sweet Deathroot, we can help you out!

How to Complete the Gurranq Questline in Elden Ring

How to Complete the Gurranq Questline in Elden Ring

In order to begin the Gurranq questline, you’ll first need to find the beast clergyman. He’s located in the Bestial Sanctum, at the top right of Caelid. This is a very high-level zone, and he is defended by not one but two bosses. One is a dragon defending the bridge, the other is the gargoyle defending the inner sanctum. These guys can be very difficult to defeat, so ride past them and hit the Site of Grace just inside of the Sanctum itself.

Once here, head up to the large creature at the back of the room. This is Gurranq. You’ll need a currency called Deathroot in order to purchase his spells, which he’ll give to you in order. He’ll give you an Eye, which quivers when you get near Deathroot.

Alternate Way to Get to Gurranq

Gurranq Early TP

Thankfully, this is not the only way to get to Gurranq. The significantly faster option is through a teleporter. North of Mistwood, just above the Third Church of Marika, there’s a small lake. Jump into the water and head to the right. You’ll see a blue breeze. Head into that teleporter to be brought right to the front of the Sanctum. In this case, the Gargoyle in front of the Sanctum will only aggro if you get too close to him. So, you can safely rest!

Deathroot Locations

There are nine total cloves of Deathroot in Elden Ring. The locations are generally shown on the bottom two maps, but bosses and dungeons may differ.

Deathroot Locations Elden Ring Limgrave Liurnia

  1. Deathtouched Catacombs (Central Limgrave) – This is located after the boss of the dungeon, after the Black Knife Assassin.
  2. Summonwater Village (Eastern Limgrave) – This is located in the ruins of the village between Limgrave and Caelid. This introduces you to the Tibia Mariner, who you will fight often during this quest. He tends to be in the center of the town; follow the undead and you should find him. Watch out for his large area of effect attacks!
    • You will also get the Skeletal Militiaman Ashes.
  3. East Liurnia of the Lakes – This Tibia Mariner is chilling in a small pool of water on the eastern side of Liurnia. He will be just before the tower on the map. You may have to search around shortly to find where he teleported to.
    • You will also get the Skeletal Bandit Ashes.

Northern Elden Ring Deathroot Locations

  1. Black Knife Catacombs (Northeastern Liurnia) – Follow the road down to the right side of the Erdtree in Eastern Liurnia. The Deathroot is behind the Cemetary Shade boss fight.
  2. Wyndham Ruins (Western Atlus Plateau) – Up on the hill past the Lux Ruins. The Mariner should spawn in the water at the bottom of the Ruins itself.
    • You will also get the Tibia’s Summons.
  3. Gelmir’s Hero Grave (East Mt. Gelmir) – At the end of the craggy area on the eastern chunk of the mountain, there’s a Hero Grave structure. At the end of this dungeon, the chest after the boss fight will give you your Deathroot.
  4. Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs (Southwest Mountaintops of the Giants) – Inside a catacomb that can be found by running east of the chain that brings you to the rest of the Mountaintop. This is also in the chest after the boss.
  5. Mountaintops of the Giants (North Mountaintops) – On the cliff south of Castle Soul. It is northwest of the Snow Valley Ruins Overlook.
    • You will also get the Helphen’s Steeple weapon.
  6. Hidden Path to the Haligtree – When climbing up the bridges, look to the west to see a broken railing. Drop down onto an invisible pathway, then head towards the opening on the side. Use arrows, pebbles, or ground-based spells to stay safe. Follow these invisible paths until you reach a short catacomb. After the boss, you’ll find the last Deathroot, behind the Stray Mimic Tear boss.

Gurranq Quest Rewards

Gurranq’s questline is very profitable… Well, for those who invest in Faith! His rewards are based on how many Deathroot you feed to him.

  1. Clawmark Seal, a seal that improves based on Strength.
  2. Bestial Sling, a short-ranged but fast stone shotgun that does impressive stagger but low damage.
  3. Bestial Vitality, a buff that allows you to slowly regenerate health. Lasts a fair bit and can be applied before a boss with plenty of time to spare.
  4. Ash of War: Beast’s Roar, a ranged attack Ash of War that scales off of Strength.

Gurranq, Angered

At the 4th Deathroot, you must leave Gurranq and rest at the Site of Grace or teleport. That’s because Gurranq has gone temporarily insane, and will lash out at the player!

Gurranq is an incredibly powerful opponent. Even in the late game, he will be difficult to force to calm down. Because of that, it is suggested that you do one of two things:

  • Use your Spirit Summon to distract him while you hammer his back. This is only recommended for higher level builds.
  • Either give him Scarlet Rot or Poison and then leave the Sanctum. Wait just outside for the poison to do 2500 damage or so, and then come back.

Gurranq will surrender once you’ve dealt about a fourth of his health. Simply sit at the site of grace to refresh him, and he should be back where he normally is. This is the only time that this hostility will happen.

The Rest of the Deathroot Rewards

  1. Beast Claw, a ground-based Area of Effect spell that cones out in front.
  2. Stone of Gurranq, an arcing ranged attack. Does impressive damage and stagger.
  3. Beastclaw Greathammer, a Strength, Dexterity, and Faith scaling Greathammer with a very strong Weapon Skill.
  4. Gurranq’s Beast Claw, a massive circle of waves coming from the caster.
  5. Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, allows a weapon to be improved to +25.

After giving him his ninth Deathroot, Gurranq will leave the Bestial Sanctum permanently.
