No matter how you approach combat in Elden Ring, you’re going to need a ranged option. However, not all players focus on archery, Sorceries, or Incantations. Fortunately, you can still use ranged spells with Ashes of War. One of the best you can find is Thunderbolt, which does exactly what you think it would. Here’s where to find the Thunderbolt Ash of War and start raining lightning down upon your opponents.
Where to Find the Thunderbolt Ash of War in Elden Ring
The Thunderbolt Ash of War is dropped by a Teardrop Scarab located in Lenydell, the Royal Capital city. Specifically, the Scarab can be found north of the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace, on a patch of grass underneath the massive dragon’s wing. As long as you can destroy the Scarab before it disappears, it will drop the Thunderbolt Ash.
To get there, start at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace, then turn and follow the stairs down toward the ground floor. Exit through the double doors and continue down the alley, evading the archer. You’ll soon hear the Scarab’s signature tingling noise. Turn left and drop over the wall underneath the dragon. The Scarab will be just around the left corner. Remember, these creatures won’t attack you, but they will dig away if you fail to quickly kill them. The only way for them to respawn is by resting at a grace site.
Once you collect the Thunderbolt Ash of War, you’re free to experiment with the upgrade on your melee weapons. As the name suggests, Thunderbolt emits a powerful surge of lightning straight from the sky. If you want to feel like Thor, this might be the closest you’ll get. It scales nicely with Dexterity, but it does take some of its power through Strength scaling. It’s still a handy ranged attack to have in your arsenal, especially if you run into close-quarter trouble. But if we do happen to run into a Mjolnir-type weapon, we’ll be sure to keep you updated!
