Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim | How to Call Horse

Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim - How to Call Horse (Summon Arvak)

The land of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is one of the best examples of a truly massive open world. It’s the model that developers have been striving towards for over ten years now. Because of that, it can be a daunting task to move across the entire snowy continent on foot. And, without much water to play around in, boats are out of the question. The only real vehicle you have to work with in Skyrim is an equestrian one. So, if you want to know how to call, summon, or even spawn a horse in Skyrim, you’ve come to the right place!

How to Call Summon Horse in Skyrim

While you can’t call a horse at will, as long as you own one, it will spawn nearby any time you fast travel. However, if you complete the “Find Arvak’s Skull” side quest in the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC, you can learn a conjuration spell that will summon a horse. The Summon Arvak spell will call an undead horse to your location anywhere in Skyrim or the Soul Cairn.

Early in the game, after you purchase a horse, it can be a chore to find it again. The only way to really find it again is by fast traveling. Doing so will make it spawn nearby, but only if it was your most recently ridden horse. A horse that dies will respawn at a hold’s stable after one or more days. With the Hearthfire DLC, you can make your own stable where you may purchase horses.

Thankfully, if you have the Dawnguard DLC – part of the Anniversary Edition of Skyrim – there is a soul in the Soul Cairn who is desperately calling for “Arvak!” The quest is simple: Head east from the front gate of the Boneyard to find the skull. It’ll be on a pedestal surrounded by four tall pillars. Grab the skull to have the ghost reappear and teach you the Summon Arvak spell, which you can use to conjure a horse anywhere. Arvak will stick around as long as you’re riding, and will disappear after you dismount or after a minute passes.

If you want to spawn a horse, you can use base ID “0010982B” in the console. If you want to summon special horses, you may use their base ID instead, or complete their quest.
