EVE Vanguard Preview: An FPS Step Into EVE Online

EVE Vanguard Preview

At EVE Fanfest last week, the team at CCP Games finally let the shooter out of the bag, so to speak, and announced EVE Vanguard. This will be CCP’s first-person shooter set in the world of EVE, meant to supplement EVE Online. This has been an announcement years in the making, with some players waiting for it since DUST 514 shut down back in 2016. We got a live preview of EVE Vanguard, and it looks like a brand-new way to explore New Eden.

First and foremost, EVE Vanguard puts our Capsuleers on the ground. Online is all about the ships, but Vanguard is about taking on new challenges with your boots on the ground. Built on Unreal Engine 5, players will become clones called Vanguards, looking to fight to free their consciousness on the planets of New Eden, scavenging downed ships for resources. Here, you will find both player versus player and player versus environment challenges as you fight your way to complete missions.

EVE Vanguard is early in development, so we only have promises of one map to explore. CCP Games told us in a briefing that this is only “a slice of the quality that we want to deliver in the future,” meaning that we can expect more content and improvements before the game launches for EVE Online Omega subscribers in December 2023.

Speaking to EVE Vanguard Art Director Neil Kaminsky, I wanted to know what CCP Games expected from current EVE Online players and new players to the EVE universe. “I think they’re going to be really curious. I think a big question about it will be, ‘What does this mean for me? If I’m an EVE player, why do I care about Vanguard?’ And from the Vanguard side, if someone’s coming just for that, they’re like, ‘Do I have to play EVE?’ There will be a massive amount of curiosity around these sorts of things.”

CCP doesn’t have all of the plans ready to share just yet, but from what we can gather, though EVE Vanguard is meant to be a module of EVE Online, however, it can be a standalone game. You won’t need to play Online to play Vanguard, and vice versa, but part of the charm is that you just might want to. I think EVE Vanguard will be a great stepping stone for players who may be curious about EVE Online but are intimidated by 20 years of lore and a dedicated player base. On the other hand, it will be a fresh new experience with tons of Easter eggs for Online players, bringing something new to the table.

From the gameplay we saw, you will get missions in EVE Vanguard to search, collect, eliminate, etc. There were evacuation mechanics, but CCP says this will not be all we see. You can jump into EVE Vanguard solo or with a squad and take down other Vanguards to complete your mission. However, they won’t be your only obstacles. While scavenging for materials, gear, and other loot, you might encounter fire, sulphur swamps, and more, making your trek harder.

EVE Vanguard looks to have a clean UI, with clear mission directives on the left and ammo and weapon details on the right. You’ll also notice crafting and equipment tabs. As you scavenge the land and crashed ships, you can craft new kinds of ammo (Kinetic Rounds and Energy Rounds shown in the preview), deployable shields, signal beacons, and more. In our briefing, we learned about things like Biomass that will heal players and that with a squad, you can be revived if you fall. If you aren’t revived, you will respawn as yet another clone.

When asked if there is weapon crafting in EVE Vanguard, Kaminsky said, “We don’t at the moment, but that’s definitely an avenue that we’re going to we’re going to pursue.” Adding, “Players will be able to manufacture different weapons, whether that’s inside and then calling them in or whether that’s upgrading and crafting weapons on the go. It’s early day, so we’ll find what resonates, to be honest.”

There is still so much unknown about EVE Vanguard, but for FPS players, especially those already invested in EVE Online, this could be an exciting new wait to experience EVE.

Not all the details about how the two games will connect have been revealed. What we do know is that Vanguard will directly impact the happenings of Online. There was talk about events in Online becoming things you can explore in Vanguard, shared resources between economies, and more.

Senior Brand Manager for EVE Online, Emily Akland, told us, “In Vanguard, you can actually have an impact, and this can grow the EVE Universe community and has huge potential to grow the EVE community in general. And I think the idea is to actually have squads as part of your corporate alliances that are just playing you Vanguard because they can impact the corporate Alliance through their activities in the game.”

She best explained EVE Vanguard: “It provides different opportunities to engage in the EVE Universe in whatever playstyle you prefer. And be a part of something greater than yourself and be part of this.” Right now, the game is being developed for the existing player base, with the community directly, but from my perspective, FPS players should not count EVE Vanguard out.

EVE Vanguard first launches for EVE Online Omega subscribers in December 2023, and you can sign up for updates and early access here.
