The last time an F-Zero game was released for a Nintendo console was in 2004 with the Japan-only F-Zero Climax on Game Boy Advance. F-Zero GX, a worldwide release, came out for the Gamecube in 2003. GX was met with universal praise for its graphics, gameplay, and challenge. It is one of the best Gamecube games of all time. Yet, the franchise has been dormant ever since.
It has been a very, very long 18 years, but we’re finally getting a new F-Zero game. By new, I mean old, of course; F-Zero X, which was initially released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, is coming to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.
30 high-speed racers are available, headlined by Captain Falcon. The futuristic racing game is best known for its intense speeds, frantic races, and challenging difficulty. The Nintendo Switch Online version will feature Gran Prix Cups, Time Trials, Death Races, and a Versus mode.
Of note is that this is the first time the franchise will feature online racing. Don’t expect 30-player matches, though. It appears to be limited to just a total of four racers at once.
As a reminder, you’ll need to have purchased the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack to play F-Zero X, as well as the other Nintendo 64 games available in their library. For more details, including pricing, be sure to check out their website.
Sadly, there are no currently known plans for an all-new F-Zero entry at this time. Perhaps, if F-Zero X does well on Nintendo Switch Online, that can change.
