Bethesda announced lots of new games recently, but its two most popular series won’t get new entries for a while. In fact, it could be many years before we see Fallout 5 release. That’s because, at least according to Bethesda’s Todd Howard, The Elder Scrolls VI is first in line.
Into The Future For Elder Scrolls VI And Fallout 5
Yes, it’s going to be quite some time before we get our hands on Fallout 5. Series fans are already used to years between releases, but the next gap could be much, much longer than before. As for why, it’s because The Elder Scrolls VI is intended to release first. Speaking to IGN, Todd Howard said that “Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and […] we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that.”
It’s a small comment, but it carries a lot of weight. After all, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released in 2011, while Fallout 4 released in 2015. It’s already been years between major series releases, and it seems that gulf only grows larger. Though both were well-received, Bethesda has since shifted its attention toward online gaming and new IPs.
Though both series cover different genres and universes, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout are huge and expansive RPG experiences. The former takes place in a detailed fantasy world, full of dragons and spells and mystery. The latter is a bit more complex; it’s more of a sci-fi retro-futurist post-apocalyptic RPG. What’s more, they’re single-player games, meaning they aren’t driven by multiplayer interactions. And as we already know, good open-world RPGs take years to build.
Bottom line, it’s still going to be years before we get to play The Elder Scrolls VI. And it’s going to be even more years after that before we see the launch of Fallout 5. If Bethesda takes its time with Starfield — which it should, honestly — then we may be more than a decade away from the next mainline Fallout game.
