Fortnite - How to Sit Out a Match

Each match of Fortnite can be intense, especially if you get towards the final few circles and the coveted Victory Royale. Especially if you’re playing with friends, there’s a chance that you may want a breather for a match. In those scenarios, your best bet is to use the sit out option to remain lobbied with your friends, but not included in matchmaking. If you need some help learning how to sit out a Fortnite match, this is how.

If you want to sit out of a Fortnite match, this is what you need to do. Luckily, there are only a few menus to scroll through, starting with the overall Settings menu.

From Settings, you need to select the Social panel and scroll down to the In Party section. There you will see several different panels with two options each. Look for the one labeled Participation, and toggle it to Sitting Out. Until you turn it back to open, any matches found by your lobby won’t include you.

It’s the perfect way to skip a game or two if you need to briefly step out, or if you want to have a breather after some intense battles. Luckily you’ll still be able to fully communicate with your party, meaning you don’t have to feel left out just because you aren’t playing. As such it works better than simply leaving the lobby, because at least you can still chat with friends.

Sitting out of a Fortnite game really is as easy as that. Just remember to re-toggle the Participation bar once you’re ready for more action. Otherwise you may be left scratching your head, wondering why the matchmaking is excluding you. Once you’re ready you can dive straight back in, building towers, defeating enemies, and working towards a Victory Royale.
