Free Bethesda games have arrived on Steam. Five titles in total from the company’s library were listed yesterday. This comes in preparation for sunsetting the native Bethesda PC launcher.
In totality, four games from the Elder Scrolls franchise and a cult-favorite team-based shooter are now available on Steam. The free Bethesda games are as follows:
- The Elder Scrolls Arena
- The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
- The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard
- An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire
- Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
All of the Elder Scrolls games come from the series’ humble beginnings. They are rough around the edges but still worth checking out. Arena is the first game in the franchise, but it hasn’t aged well. Daggerfall is the ambitious sequel with a very devoted cult following. It’s not going to be for everyone, though. The game is notorious for being absurdly large in terms of map size.
Redguard and Battlespire are expansions/spin-offs that are honestly better left uninstalled. They’re still Elder Scroll games, though, so maybe that counts for something!
The fifth of the free Bethesda games is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Originally planned as an expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Enemy Territory eventually became its own thing. Released in 2003, Enemy Territory is a class-based objective shooter in the veins of Team Fortress. It launched completely free from day one and has a cult following even today.
On a personal note, it’s also easily the game I’ve spent the most time with. While I don’t have a hard count, my playtime is definitely in the thousands of hours.
It’s important to note that most of these games were already free or very affordable. These Bethesda titles are full price or anything. Having said that, it’s still a good way to get some free games, though.
