At today’s PlayStation Showcase, fans finally got a glimpse of Sony Santa Monica’s God of War Ragnarok. Fans haven’t heard much from developers after the game was delayed earlier this year, however, today’s presentation included not only a title reveal, but an extended look at the game’s plot and gameplay. Kratos and Atreus are back for more ancient Norse action – and it looks like a certain God of Thunder is here to keep them busy.
God of War Ragnarok Trailer Shows Off New Enemies
Based on the new trailer, it certainly seems like Thor, the son of Odin, will do battle with Kratos during Ragnarok. We briefly saw Thor in 2018’s God of War, as Kratos battles his brother Baldur, and his sons Modi and Magni. In fact, Kratos ends up killing several of Thor’s family members, meaning their eventual confrontation will be full of resentment.
The teaser trailer opens by showing Kratos and his son Atreus camping out in the Midgard wilderness. They’re still reeling from the bombshell that Ragnarok is coming centuries earlier than expected. They soon learn that a former associate of Odin, Tyr, could be the key to stopping this catastrophic event. This revelation is followed by a quick look at a mythological quest to find the potential ally, while racing against Odin’s forces to prevent Armageddon.
Excitingly, the trailer also shows off some glimpses at God of War Ragnarok’s gameplay. Kratos’ classic weapons are back and better than ever. Notable are the Blades of Chaos, which seem to have new fire-based movesets. Kratos has new creatures to face off against too, from slimy reptiles to mace-wielding thugs. The trailer reaches its peak as Thor taunts Kratos in front of his son, who was revealed to be Loki at the end of the previous game, with his hammer Mjolnir glistening and ready for battle.
Ragnarok looks like it is set to be another thrilling installment in the God of War franchise – and one that is more hyped than ever, considering its turbulent release cycle. There’s no release date yet, but you can expect God of War Ragnarok to launch at some point in 2022, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
