The latest version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is set to release later this year, meaning Rockstar’s game will have dropped on three different generations of consoles. This Expanded and Enhanced edition will fine-tune the graphics for new hardware, and introduce new content, too. While the re-release has been confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, there’s one console that seems to be missing. We’ve got the lowdown on if GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced is coming to Nintendo Switch.
Will GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced Release On Switch?
Bad news for Nintendo fans – it doesn’t seem like GTA on Switch will happen any time soon. Rockstar Games hasn’t confirmed a version of the game for Switch and there is nothing to suggest it will in the future.
When GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced was announced in summer 2020, Rockstar confirmed it would release on “a new generation of consoles,” no doubt meaning PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Since the Switch had been out for three years at that point, it probably wasn’t classed as “new” hardware. Therefore, it seems increasingly unlikely that it’ll arrive on Switch.
Equally, Rockstar isn’t known for porting its games over to Nintendo consoles. It has released some before – but the most recent was the L.A. Noire remaster in 2017. That game wasn’t a mainline Rockstar release, developed by Team Bondi instead. GTA 5 is as mainline Rockstar as it gets, so release strategies could be different when Rockstar functions as a publisher rather than a developer.
Of course, you can’t rule out GTA 5 Switch versions in the future. The game is now playable on seven platforms, so anything is possible in the years to come. It does seem that Rockstar’s silence on the Switch probably suggests it won’t be happening any time soon. GTA 5 is playable on nearly every console released in the past decade, except the Nintendo Switch.
