Huge news came out of today’s PlayStation Showcase, as Insomniac Games announced not one, but two Marvel video games. First up was a small teaser for Marvel’s Wolverine, a standalone game based on the X-Men’s resident claw-slasher. This was followed by a more detailed look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is set to launch in 2023. We’ve got all the key info from both of Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel projects.
Surprise Wolverine Game Set to Get Bloody
Yes, while we might have expected to see Spidey in some capacity, nobody saw Marvel’s Wolverine coming. The brief cinematic trailer shows off a flannel-wearing man slumped at a bar, seemingly reeling from a fight. It cuts to a shot of his bloodied fists, and out pops Wolverine’s trademark adamantium claws.
All we know so far is that Marvel’s Wolverine will be a standalone game separate from any X-Men continuity, and unlikely to cross over with Spider-Man. For a character as inherently violent as Wolverine, you’d expect this to aim for an M rating, too. Details are very thin on the ground at the moment, and there isn’t even a release year yet. However, a subsequent Playstation Blog says the game will explore Wolverine’s obligation “to defend people who are less able to do so,” teasing a character-driven and emotional story.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Returns With Venom in Tow
While Marvel’s Wolverine was the big surprise, a reveal trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was the icing on top for PlayStation fans. The trailer shows Peter Parker and Miles Morales, hot off his own spin-off game, zipping through New York. That is until they bump into Venom, voiced by Candyman’s Tony Todd. The ominous voiceover also teases Kraven the Hunter, who is seeking to bring Spider-Man down.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a release window of 2023, though of course we’ll get more details down the line. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be a Marvel fan, with two of its biggest heroes making their mark on PlayStation 5 in a massive way. Also, don’t forget that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is also on the way later this year!
