The April 15 Resident Evil Showcase revealed plenty of new details. The main focus was Resident Evil Village, with new demos and a trailer. Nonetheless, the virtual reality version of Resident Evil 4 is sure to excite VR users.
The main concern is whether Resident Evil 4 VR will release on numerous platforms, or if it’ll be exclusive. The recent announcement only mentioned the Oculus Quest 2 hardware, with no confirmation of other Oculus devices, or the PlayStation VR console. It seems likely non-Oculus hardware won’t be supported, as Facebook, who owns Oculus, is developing the game. If console-exclusive games have taught us anything, we probably won’t see Resident Evil 4 VR on other systems.
With another showcase set for April 21, it’s probable that developers Capcom will clear up the situation in the coming weeks. Facebook is hosting the event to show off the Quest 2 hardware, and with such a high-profile franchise as Resident Evil on its side, it’s almost certain we’ll learn more about Resident Evil 4 VR.
Also currently unclear is whether this VR remake is the last we’ll see of the game. A new version entered development in 2018, before an official announcement last spring. Initially assumed to be a current-gen release in the vein of recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, the VR announcement has made this uncertain. This could be the remake in question, but only releasing on Oculus Quest 2 limits the player’s reach.
The lack of mention of other platforms certainly points to this. If so, the hopes for a console-based remake will likely come to an end. However, the Facebook showcase on April 21 will likely clear this up for good, but until then, it’s best to assume the upcoming remake will launch exclusively on Oculus Quest 2. So, it looks like we are going to have to wait just a little longer before we will know for sure.
