Five weeks after achievements for the Goldeneye 007 remaster leaked online, there’s more smoke about the game’s official announcement.

Industry insider Jeff Grubb mentioned on the Giant Bomb show GrubbSnax that Microsoft is preparing to announce the Nintendo 64 classic.

“I think that Microsoft is going to be the one to announce that first,” he said. “I think this game is probably coming pretty soon. I’m thinking next couple of weeks.” VGC has also heard the same news, according to a report.

Unlike the 2010 reboot from Activision, the Goldeneye 007 Remaster is a faithful adaptation of the classic FPS from Rare and Nintendo. Despite widespread interest, the game’s rights have been in a state of constant flux. Rare, the game’s developer, is now owned by Microsoft. IO Interactive holds the IP rights for James Bond games. Nintendo published the original release. As you can see, that’s three different companies involved in a video game love triangle, sort to speak.

Rare was hard at work on the Goldeneye 007 Remaster for Xbox 360 before the game was canceled. Youtuber Graslu00 obtained a leaked copy of the game, which was nearly finished and ready for release.

There are too many coincidences at work here. Nintendo and Microsoft have seemed to be cooperating a lot recently, as evident by Ori and the Blind Forest releasing on Nintendo Switch, for example. It looks like the only thing that would hold up the Goldeneye 007 Remaster today are the legal issues. Again, we’re dealing with several companies that have a stake in the franchise’s rights.

Will we finally see the proper release of a Goldeneye 007 Remaster, one that is complete with updated visuals, textures, and controls? Only time will tell, but it’s looking more and more likely by the day. Of course, it was looking more and more likely over a decade ago, too. For now, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed.
