Ken Kutaragi, the creator of PlayStation, spoke recently with Bloomberg. The head of a robotics company called Ascent, the company’s goal is to blend both the real world and the virtual world.
Founded in Tokyo back in 2016, Ascent’s goal is to develop software and products for robotics to better interact with the real world. Naturally, the topic of the Metaverse came up.
“Being in the real world is very important, but the metaverse is about making quasi-real in the virtual world, and I can’t see the point of doing it,” Kutaragi told Bloomberg. “You would rather be a polished avatar instead of your real self? That’s essentially no different from anonymous messageboard sites.”
You heard it here, folks. The Metaverse is just a message board.
Kutaragi also spoke about applications such as Virtual Reality headsets, including the one that exists at his former company. He’s not a fan.
“Headsets would isolate you from the real world, and I can’t agree with that. Headsets are simply annoying.”
With Ascent’s goal being to integrate the real and digital worlds, it makes sense why he isn’t the biggest fan of both the Metaverse and Virtual Reality headsets. Oculus, PSVR, and others are fun, but he’s right: headsets are annoying. Having to put them on and adjust them break immersion.
Meanwhile, PlayStation recently announced the new PlayStation VR2 back at CES.
