Knights of the Old Republic Remake Indefinitely Delayed

The much-anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is under duress. Announced in the latter half of 2021 during a PlayStation Showcase event, the project appears to be further away from release than most anticipated. Reports are indicating that developer Aspyr has delayed the game indefinitely. This comes amid shakeups at Aspyr, the studio tasked with revamping BioWare’s classic Star Wars RPG.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Delayed

This news comes according to Bloomberg, effectively showing that the KOTOR remake is stuck in development hell. The report suggests that developers made a vertical slice of close-to-finished product, showing it to Aspyr’s management. Following a less than glowing reaction to the preview, various team members were removed.

Aspyr fired the game’s Art Director and Design Director following the private demo, Bloomberg reports. Anonymous sources claiming to be devs on the project say that they have now been instructed to focus on other projects instead. As such, it appears that vast internal reworkings are underway to stabilize the project. It puts all the key details such as a release date into limbo.

According to Jason Schreier, Aspyr initially planned to release the game in 2022. However, Aspyr never divulged this publicly, and 2025 now seems more realistic. The backlash to the vertical slice supposedly occurred in June 2022, meaning there has been time to hire replacements. Aspyr has yet to comment on the reports circling. Therefore, it’s hard to say whether it has resolved the supposed problems yet or not.

Nonetheless, it’s certainly bad news for Star Wars fans excited for this remake. It was one of the biggest announcements at the late 2021 PlayStation Showcase, with a dazzling reveal trailer to boot. Players excited to dive back into the world of Darth Revan and a pre-prequel era of Star Wars will have to wait a lot longer.
