How to Get Amethyst Shards in Minecraft

Amethyst Shards are one of the newest resources in Minecraft, and they’re used for three new recipes: the Block of Amythest, the Spyglass, and the Tinted Glass. All require an amethyst shard. To get the Amythest Shard, you’re going to have to head back into the caves of the world and find a very specific natural resource.

Amethyst Geodes are the resources you seek. You can only find these massive recreations of real geodes inside the deepest caves of Minecraft. The best place to start looking is by making your way down to Y=30. Specifically, Amythest Geodes will spawn from Y=30 down to Y=64. These geodes are giant spheres made of three layers: Basalt, Calcite, and then Amythest blocks. However, following the update, some of the blocks were replaced with Budding Amythest Blocks. These special blocks will eventually sprout Amythest Crystals, which you can harvest for shards.

You’ll get four shards of Amythest for each crystal you break with a pickaxe. If you use an explosive or a piston, you’ll only get two. You can increase the number of shards received by equipping a fortune pickaxe, which depending on the level will increase the average number of shards you receive. Fortune 3 will net you an average of 8.9 shards per geode.

Lastly, there’s no point trying to pick up a Budding Amythest Block. No matter what you do, you won’t be able to equip or place them. If you’re planning on getting more amethyst, you’re going to have to come back to the geode.
