Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios announced today that the next entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise will be released this September. The new game, titled Mortal Kombat 1, isn’t a remake such as a blast back to the past and will feature familiar faces, new combat modes, and buckets of gore if the trailer is anything to go by.
The new trailer is a cinematic and bloody preview of what’s to come when the game releases on September 19 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The game is touted as a “reborn Mortal Kombat universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang.” It promises a “new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities” and mechanics like Kameo fighting partners, where you can pick from a “unique” roster of helpful characters who will assist you in fights.
As for returning characters, NetherRealm has confirmed Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. Additionally, Tsung will be available as a preorder bonus, and Johnny Cage will have a Jean-Claude Van Damme skin included in the Kombat Pack DLC.
Preorders for the game open tomorrow, May 19, with the expected slew of various editions. Alongside the standard edition, there will also be a premium and Kollectors edition. The premium edition will come with early access to the game beginning on September 14, 1,250 dragon krystals, Johnny Cage skin, early access to six new playable characters, and five new Kameo fighters. The Kollectors edition includes everything in the premium edition, a 16.5-inch Liu Kang statue, three art prints, a steel case, and an additional 1,4250 dragon krystals.
