Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat: Onslaught today. A new entry in the franchise, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, Onslaught is a mobile exclusive RPG title.
This isn’t the first mobile game for Mortal Kombat; Mortal Kombat Mobile was released in 2015. Mortal Kombat Onslaught seems to be a mobile-first experience with the promise of a cinematic story experience.
The most recent entry in the Mortal Kombat series is Mortal Kombat 11, available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
“Mortal Kombat is a legendary franchise and pop culture phenomenon, and it continues to engage players and advance the fighting genre across multiple platforms,” said David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Games, in a press release. “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a testament to why Mortal Kombat has been a top gaming franchise for over 30 years, as the NetherRealm team continues to innovate and bring new gameplay to fans.”
Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer for NetherRealm Studios, added the following in the same press release. “We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature. With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”
The press release was scant on gameplay details for Mortal Kombat Onslaught. In addition to the cinematic story experience, it states that players will build a team of fighters from the franchise’s roster and use them in real-time group battles. On the surface, this sounds like an action RPG akin to Diablo: Immortal.
Let’s hope the monetization is better than Immortal’s.
