Some film fans and critics will argue that filmmaking as an art form is dying. While I am not a fan of most movies hitting our screens, I still feel the medium can positively influence our lives.

Despite Hollywood’s insistence on flooding the market with reboots and comic-book franchises, cinematic treasures are out there waiting for us. A recent online post asks people to name a movie that changed their lives. Here are some fans’ suggestions.

1. 8 ½ (1963)

Federico Fellini’s surrealist masterpiece is a testament to self-reflexive cinema. As the movie progresses, the film blurs the lines between reality and fiction, which inspired one Fellini fan. “This is a movie about a creative man who is fearing the end of his productive life,” explains a Fellini follower.

2. Along Came Polly (2004)

A comedy fan explains how one scene in Along Came Polly in which the protagonist woos his love interest by learning salsa dancing inspired him to take up dancing. “Soon, I got good enough where I was dancing on a performance team,” says the quick-hipped commenter. He was so good he met a cute girl on the team who later became his wife.

3. Into The Wild (2007)

“Some people feel like they don’t deserve love,” says Into The Wild subject Chris McCandless. “They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past.” This ethos spoke to someone “amazed every time” they watch the Emile Hirsch vehicle about disappearing from society into nature.

4. Dead Poets Society (1989)

“I first saw the movie when I was about 14 in a high school literature class, and it completely changed my entire perspective on life,” says a fan of the Robin Williams ’80s classic. Dylan Thomas’ influence is strong in this movie, which teaches us to strive for a life without regret.

5. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

An Indian film-lover claims that watching Revenge of The Sith inspired him to improve his English, starting his journey to a dream job in Mumbai. “Movies became my English tutor,” recalls the former student. “I started devouring every movie I could get my hands on, and with time, my grasp over the language improved significantly.”

6. Rainman (1988)

Anyone who saw Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise’s tearjerker about living with autism will agree with one thread contributor, who believes the film teaches a good lesson. “Sometimes love is unspeakable; don’t judge the person based on the outward appearance.”

7. The Fountain (2006)

After a man with a dream career, a trophy wife, and a nice house started having panic attacks, he sought counseling. It wasn’t until he saw Darren Aronofsky’s ethereal movie that he found peace. The film’s message about the inevitability of death touched a nerve. “That worrying over death and trying to fight … was not only useless,” comments the forum member, “it makes you miss out on the life you’re living right now.”

8. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

The Ben Stiller remake received lukewarm reviews on its release. However, it struck a chord with one viewer who felt the message ring true. “Don’t get so caught up on the idea of your dream that you forget actually to begin working towards it,” the reflective individual suggests. “Stop dreaming; start doing.”

9. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

When brave protagonist Christopher Gardner declares, “You want something, go and get it. Period,” someone experiencing career doldrums found inspiration. “I often repeat this to myself when I feel my career has no direction,” they explain. “Every time I repeat it, I find (a) new direction!”

10. Interstellar (2014)

I will agree on this inclusion in the thread. Interstellar recounts the story of a talented ex-pilot drafted into an emergency mission to find a new planet for the human race while leaving his beloved family behind.

The idea that someone gives up everything they love to save the world is a narcissistic trope. However, I was in a difficult place when I saw Christopher Nolan’s film: Living in China with my infant son 10,000 miles away. I identified with the character’s pain as he leaves his children — possibly forever.
