According to a report by Bloomberg, Sony will announce its new PlayStation subscription plan very shortly. We may see an announcement as early as next week
Known as the codename Spartacus, it is Sony’s version of Xbox Game Pass. Jason Schreier and Takashi Mochizuki mention that their sources indicate a “splashy lineup of hit games from recent years” will be featured on the new PlayStation subscription plan. It will also combine both PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus into one package. The option to choose various tiers will be available for customers. These tiers will include both modern releases and classic games of old. Pricing options are not mentioned at this time.
Phil Spencer and Microsoft will welcome the new PlayStation subscription plan. “I don’t mean it to sound like we’ve got it all figured out, but I think the right answer is allowing your customers to play the games they wanna play, where they wanna play them and giving them choice about how they build their library and being transparent with them about what our plans are in terms of our PC initiatives and our cross-gen initiatives and other things,” he said recently. “So when I hear others doing things like Game Pass or coming to PC, it makes sense to me because I think that’s the right answer.”
One advantage that Xbox Game Pass will likely have over this new PlayStation subscription is day one releases. Games like Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, and others are available on Game Pass the same day they release in stores. Sony is not planning that feature, according to Bloomberg’s sources.
2021 saw a total of $6,300 worth of games added to GamePass. It’s unknown if Sony is willing to compete on that level. We’ll find out soon enough.
