The Witcher 4 Announced By CD Projekt RED
Yes, in a move that came out of nowhere, CD Projekt Red confirmed a new Witcher game is in the works. Details are slim right now, though the tagline — ‘A New Saga Begins’ — leaves a lot to the imagination.
Behind-the-scenes, it seems like The Witcher 4 will use a totally new engine. The statement from CDPR confirms that the new game will run on Unreal Engine 5 instead of REDengine. That’s notable due to the release of Cyberpunk 2077, which faced a lot of issues at launch. The new engine suggests The Witcher 4 will aim to avoid these problems. On top of that, CDPR is pairing with Epic Games in a “multi-year strategic partnership.”
Yet an even more exciting prospect is how this new game will slot into the story. It’s been almost seven years since we last saw Geralt, Ciri, and company in Wild Hunt. Given that game had so many endings, fans will no doubt wonder which will be considered canon. On top of a standalone Gwent game and two seasons of a Netflix show, the franchise is a hot property right now. As such, it’s no surprise that CDPR is going back to continue the story.
Details on a release date are unsurprisingly slim, as the game is no doubt in the very early stages. Especially after the Cyberpunk debacle, it’s likely that the developers will take their time with The Witcher 4. It could be a very long way off, but it’ll no doubt be an adventure worth the wait.
