After so many years of the minimap getting implemented in almost all MMORPGs, it is definitely engraved into the genre. New World is different. It has a compass, and a big map. This led some developers, granted, not from Amazon Game Studios, to create third-party software solutions that grant the minimap functionality. Basically, instead of spamming the map to know your surroundings, players get a minimap on screen. BUT are these minimaps legal and are they allowed?
Minimap Installation & Is It Legal? – New World
If I’m honest, I suspect that this will be quite a controversial topic. The code of conduct is, for a lack of a better word, vague. This means the usage of this minimap or whether it is legal is unclear.
DISLAIMER: But even though we’ll go through an installation of the Overwolf Minimap, we do not in any way condone the usage of this minimap. This is purely for educational purposes. The code of conduct states: “Do not cheat, bot, hack, or use other software or services that give you an unfair advantage through, for example, unattended gameplay or game modifications.”.
With that out of the way, let’s go over the installation procedure of the Overwolf Minimap:
- Go to the NW Minimap website.
- Click on “Get the In-Game App” at the bottom of the screen.
- Once it has downloaded, launch the exe file.
- Follow the steps in the installation suite.
Like I said before, while the code of conduct might be vague, it does state that unattended gameplay or game modifications are strictly against the rules.
This minimap has basically some of the same functionalities as the normal map in the game, with a few additional ones. It is fair to say that anyone that uses this third-party minimap will have some type of an advantage compared to other players.
The download count is through the roof on some of these third-party minimaps and it doesn’t seem to stop. It will be a controversial topic for sure, and there is a chance that it might prompt an official implementation of a minimap, considering the overwhelming interest for this functionality.
