Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Have Sold Six Million Copies

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have sold over six million units worldwide in their first week of availability. The announcement came via a release from the Pokemon Company.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are remakes of the original Diamond and Pearl releases on the Nintendo DS from 2006. The fourth generation of Pokemon games expanded the day/night feature, updated battle mechanics, and introduced the world of Sinnoh. They are the third Pokemon release seen on the Nintendo Switch; the first was another remake: Pokemon Let’s Go, Eevee and Pikachu. The second was a new entry in the series, Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The Switch versions have been upgraded with the “chibi” art style first introduced in Pokemon Let’s Go, Eevee! and Let’s Go, Pikachu!

It’s been a good year for all things Pokemon. Pokemon Unite, the free-to-play MOBA that launched earlier this year, has seen over 50 million downloads. Pokemon Legends: Arceus, revealed earlier this year, is shaping up for its January 28, 2022 release.

A part of the 25th anniversary of the franchise, alongside Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a new take on Pokemon games. It features an open world for players to explore, akin to one of Nintendo’s best Switch games, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Some have even compared the two games directly to each other.
