Insomniac Games’ 2016 Ratchet & Clank will be getting a PS5 upgrade in April that will allow it to run at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5. The game is currently free to download on PlayStation 5 through March 31 as part of PlayStation’s Play at Home campaign.
The free upgrade news was shared by Insomniac on Twitter, as the developers get ready for the launch of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart this April. The 60 FPS upgrade of the 2016 hit was likely planned to give players a taste of what it will feel like to play Rift Apart on PS5 in a few short months. 2016’s Ratchet & Clank was released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive and ran at 30 FPS, so this is a welcomed upgrade for longtime fans of the series.
After the successful launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man as a PlayStation exclusive in 2018, Sony purchased Insomniac Games for $229 million dollars in 2020. This move will continue to help PlayStation bolster its lineup of first-party exclusives, which is evident by the upcoming release of the PlayStation exclusive Rift Apart.
The 2016 release served as a reboot for the Ratchet & Clank series, but the upcoming Rift Apart will not serve as a sequel. Instead, it was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2020 that it’ll follow the events of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, which released on that PlayStation 3 in 2013. However, during the presentation, Insomniac Creative Director Marcus Smith did confirm that Rift Apart is a standalone adventure.
Rift Apart is currently set to release on June 11, 2021 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. It’ll be the first entry into the series in nearly five years and will also introduce a new female Lombax from a new dimension.
If you missed out on the 2016 Ratchet & Clank, there’s still time to download it for free via the Play at Home Campaign through the end of March. Those with an active PS Plus subscription can continue to download the game for free past the March deadline for Play at Home as part of the PS Plus Collection.
