Devolver Digital has announced the next entry in their ninja arena shooter franchise with Shadow Warrior 3, which will release on PC sometime in 2021. As of writing, an official release date has not been confirmed, and we also don’t know if the title will be coming to consoles at launch. Further, the Shadow Warrior 3 announcement included a short teaser trailer that offered a first look at the game.
The more detailed gameplay reveal will be shown during the July 11 Devolver Direct, presumably with more details about the game. A two-minute teaser trailer has been released alongside the reveal announcement, which showcases Shadow Warrior 3‘s graphics, features, and enemies. You can watch the video below.
The next installment of the demonic hack-and-slash follows Lo Wang, the protagonist of the previous titles, along with his former employer turned nemesis turned sidekick Orochi Zilla. The pair embark on an unthinkable mission to recapture an ancient apocalyptic dragon they unwillingly unleashed from its eternal prison. Lo Wang and his sidekick will need all the firepower and magic they can get to hunt down the calamitous entity and prevent a forthcoming cataclysm.
Shadow Warrior 3 will take place across a mythical, neo-feudal Japan overrun with demonic yokai, supernatural monsters from Japanese folklore. As seen in the teaser trailer, the game will feature a multitude of movement options, such as wall-running, air dashes, double jumps, and the brand new grappling hook. Environments will be filled with hazardous structures and devices that can be activated by the player, offering more offensive strategies when taking on the demons.
Shadow Warrior 3 is the third title of Devolver Digital’s reboot series of the original 1997 shoot-em-up of the same name. All six of the franchise’s games follow the endeavors of Lo Wang, a modern ninja warrior and former bodyguard as he fights through demons and corporate-hired soldiers throughout Japan. The reboot series has since released on modern consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation, receiving Metacritic scores between 70 and 78 throughout the various platforms.
If previous entries are anything to keep in mind then fans and newcomers alike should expect profuse gore as you fight through the yokai hordes wielding devastating firepower and swift katana strikes. Players will also be able to absorb the power of enemies through executing spectacular finishing moves and unleashing said power in the form of magic. The game will undoubtedly have no shortage of one-liners and comedic banter from Lo Wang himself.
For those interested in seeing more of the game, the Devolver Digital’s Direct will take place on July 11 at 12 PM PT/ 3 PM ET on Twitch.
