Today’s most exciting news comes from the upcoming sequel to 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog. Hollywood actor Idris Elba, recently known for his role as Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, revealed via Twitter today that he’ll be voicing Knuckles, the red Echidna often seen alongside Sonic in the games. Firstly, the key development so far is part of the new reveal today – that Sonic sidekicks like Tails and Knuckles will be in the sequel. We already knew that Tails would appear thanks to the post-credits scene in the first movie. However, Knuckles’ presence was only confirmed through set photos that leaked earlier this year. Based on a synopsis released by Paramount Pictures in May, it seems that Knuckles will play an antagonistic role. He’ll team up with Jim Carrey’s Dr. Eggman to get revenge on Sonic – which should make for an exciting premise.
Elsewhere, we also know that the human characters from the first Sonic movie are back, too. X-Men’s James Marsden reprises his role as Tom Wachowski, though it sounds like his role will be much smaller. Paramount have confirmed that him and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter) will be on vacation for much of the film, meaning Sonic and the other animal creatures will take center stage.
Aside from that, though, Paramount are keeping their cards very close to their chest. The film is less than a year from release now, and all we have promotion-wise is a new logo, and the Knuckles teaser posted by Elba today.
