After months of rumors, Sony today announced the revamped PlayStation Plus service. This new variant is set to rival Xbox Game Pass, while replacing the current PlayStation Now scheme. Read on to learn more about the upcoming changes to PlayStation Plus, including the release date and price.
New PlayStation Plus Release Date and Price
In a blog post today, Sony confirmed it will overhaul PlayStation Plus from June 2022 onward. Rather than just a single subscription fee, it’s to become a tiered system, with a range of memberships for plays to explore.
The base option is PlayStation Essential. It’s similar to the current subscription, giving you online server access as well as free monthly games. There’s no price change either, coming in at $9.99 a month or $59.99 yearly.
Next is the Extra option. This includes everything from Essential, as well as a library of 400 PS4 and PS5 games to enjoy. This includes first-party titles as well as multi-platform hits, with all of them set to be downloadable. That costs $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
The final tier is Premium, which includes a lot more. On top of the two previous tiers, you also get access to PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PSP games. There’s no news on the library yet, though we do know that the PS3 games won’t be downloadable. The final perk is access to game trials, presumably for upcoming first-party titles. That’ll cost $17.99 monthly or $119.99 a year.
Evidently there’s a lot to take in, as PlayStation aims to launch a Game Pass rival. The only sticking point is the price point, with a month of the Premium tier costing more than a month of Game Pass Ultimate at $14.99. Given there’s no details on what games are included in the legacy console collections, as well as PS3 games only available via cloud streaming, there are some problems. However, it’s sure to excite PlayStation owners finally ready to experience a higher-level subscription service.
