Huge news coming from Sony and PlayStation today, as the team announces the purchase of Bungie. The developer is best known for pioneering the Halo series, which first put the Xbox on the map. After splitting with Microsoft in 2007, Bungie went on to make cross-platform FPS Destiny in 2014. Following this purchase, no doubt in response to Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision, this changes everything for Destiny.
Bungie Now Part of Sony Interactive Entertainment
Yes, in news that nobody saw coming, Bungie now falls under the PlayStation Studios bracket. It joins developers like Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, and Insomniac Games, working on first-party PlayStation titles. However, there’s no news on upcoming exclusivity just yet. As such, it’ll be a tense wait for fans to learn if future games like a potential Destiny 3 will go exclusive.
Bungie confirmed the news in a statement on its website today (January 31):
“In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment,” it reads. It goes on to say that Bungie will continue independently publishing their titles, hinting at cross-platform releases. “Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play,” it continues.
The main concern right now is around Destiny 2, and whether it may become PlayStation exclusive. The good news for Xbox and PC players is that the game will remain cross-platform. As part of a ‘shared vision’ post on the Bungie site, as it confirms the game will remain cross-platform despite now being a PlayStation-owned game. This makes it seem like Sony’s acquisition is more financial than anything else. A Q&A answer, in response to questions about future exclusivity, confirms that future Bungie titles will also be on other consoles. Therefore, rather than becoming a first-party developing exclusives, Bungie will retain its creative freedom.
