Sora’s arrival in Smash Bros. marks quite a unique situation, with Nintendo teaming up with a third-party developer to introduce a non-Nintendo character to the game’s wildly varied roster. Of course, it isn’t the first time, as other characters like Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man are also in the game. However, Kingdom Hearts isn’t a series traditionally linked with Nintendo, so it’s certainly an interesting development. Yet despite the potential progress, there’s a tinge of sadness to the news. With Sora officially confirmed, it marks the definitive end of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lifecycle, with no new DLC expected. In the three years since its release, Ultimate has become the best-selling fighting game of all time. It’s introduced countless new players to the genre, and given long-term fans a nostalgic boost, too.
While the curtain may be closing on Ultimate, you can guarantee this isn’t the last we’ll see of Super Smash Bros. The gap between Ultimate and the 3DS and Wii U Smash games was four years. By that logic, a new Smash game would arrive next year – but considering Ultimate’s support has only just ended, it could be a while.
The next Smash game might not even come out on Switch – but considering how beloved the franchise is, it’ll be worth the wait.
