Stardew Valley Harvey Guide | Marriage, Schedule, and Gifts

Stardew Valley Harvey

Whether you’ve dragged your feet to the clinic for an Energy Tonic after chopping a few too many trees or found yourself in a hospital bed after overdoing it in the mines, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Stardew Valley’s resident physician, Dr. Harvey. The bespectacled, airplane-loving, messy-haired older gentleman is not only your friendly neighborhood drug, er, pharmaceuticals dealer but also one of the dozen candidates for marriage in your new home in Pelican Town. Whether you’re looking to get hitched and sweep him off his clumsy feet or just get him a nice gift for his birthday (as if that 1,000g doctor’s fee he wrings outta you isn’t enough), let’s get to know your new neighbor Harvey.

Who is Harvey?

Stardew Valley Harvey

Harvey is a kind, if not a little socially awkward fellow who lives in an apartment over his clinic, located in the Pelican Town square next door to Pierre’s. His home is definitely that of a bachelor; his refrigerator is packed with microwave dinners and a scarcely used oven. This will soon become evident as once you’ve become close friends, he’ll divulge that he doesn’t cook often. (This is further evidenced by the fact that he is one of very few Pelican Town residents who, no matter how your friendship grows, will never send you a recipe by mail.) Conversations with Harvey often involve warnings to eat healthy, wear sunscreen, and not to overdo it on that farm of yours.

Harvey doesn’t have many friends in town, save for Maru, who works at his Clinic at the front desk. (Certain dialogue at town events will imply that he may have a crush on her, and he’ll dance with her at the Flower Dance if you don’t scoop him or her up instead.) He cares about all his patients, but he’s a practical man who maintains a professional relationship with most people in town, though this makes his life a little lonely. His heart can be won with a simple cup of coffee, though he wouldn’t mind some farm-fresh pickles or wine if you happen to find yourself with a surplus.

Best Gifts for Harvey

Stardew Valley Harvey Gifts

All villagers have gifts that are Loves, Likes, Neutrals, Dislikes, and Hates. A loved gift will earn you 80 Friendship Points with your intended recipient, liked gifts earn 40, neutrals earn 20, dislikes cost -20, and hated gifts cost a painful -40 points. It’s important to be mindful of what your friends don’t like to avoid conflict. Harvey is a little pickier than some of your other neighbors in Pelican Town, but the items he loves are easily acquired.

As a general rule for gifts for Harvey, he likes just about anything that can be considered healthy and nothing that’s not. he is a doctor after all. His favorite things are coffee, pickles of any kind, truffle oil, wine of any kind (including Salmonberry wine, despite hating salmonberries), and a cooking dish called Super Meal.

Loves

The easiest way to win Harvey over will be coffee. If you’ve happened upon a Coffee Bean from killing enemies in the mines or from the Traveling Cart, you can use five Beans in a Keg to make a cup of coffee, but the easiest way to get it is from the Star Drop Saloon. It will be in stock every day and costs 300g. If you want to watch Harvey’s caffeine intake, you can also use a keg to make wine with any type of fruit.

Truffle Oil is a little bit more time-consuming to obtain, as it requires a deluxe barn, a pig that will dig up truffles on your farm each day it is let out of the barn, and an oil maker. Truth be told, you’ll likely want to reserve your Truffle Oil for crafting Rain Totems rather than gifting them to Harvey, but it would be fun for a special occasion. You’d be better off using a preserves jar to make pickles with any type of vegetable for a gift instead.

Super Meal is a Cooked Dish that is made with Cranberries, Bok Choy, and Artichoke. You’ll get the recipe once you’ve gotten to seven hearts of friendship with Kent, so this won’t be a dish you can make until later in your second year. If you happen to find the dish itself in the Stardrop Saloon’s rotating stock or in Krobus’ store on Saturdays, it might be a worthwhile gift for Harvey, as he is the only Pelican Town resident who loves it. Otherwise, it may not be worth your time to make.

Harvey also loves all universally loved gifts, including Golden Pumpkins, Pearls, Prismatic Shards, Magic Rock Candy, and Rabbit’s Feet. Harvey is a pretty simple guy who likes pretty easily obtainable items, so you may want to reserve these universally loved gifts for some of the more difficult residents of Pelican Town.

Likes

Harvey is much pickier when it comes to liked gifts. As previously mentioned, the town doctor is kind of obligated to dislike many unhealthy things, so if it’s healthy, Harvey will probably pass.

He likes a ton of foraged items, including Chanterelles, Common Mushrooms, Daffodils, Dandelions, Hazelnuts, Holly, Leeks, Magma Caps, Morels, Purple Mushrooms, Snow Yams, Spring Onions, Wild Horseradish, and Winter Roots. He also likes Goat Milk (NOT cow’s Milk; he is neutral toward this for unknown reasons), Duck Eggs, Duck Feathers, Ginger, and Quartz, and all Fruit except Salmonberries and Spice Berries, both of which he hates.

It’s best to throw out the list of Universal Likes, as Harvey dislikes quite a few items, but here’s the full list for reference:

  • He likes all Artisan Goods, except Oil, which he dislikes; Void Mayonnaise, which he hates; Coffee, Pickles, Truffle Oil, and Wine, all of which he loves; and Cheese and Goat Cheese, which he dislikes.
  • This is the tough one. Harvey likes all Cooked Dishes except the following: He loves Super Meal, and dislikes Blueberry Tarts, Chocolate Cake, Cookies, Cranberry Sauce, Fried Mushrooms, Glazed Yams, Hashbrowns, Ice Cream (utterly insane), Pancakes, Pink Cake, Pizza (he’s out of his mind), Rhubarb Pie, and Rice Pudding. Jeez, Harv!
  • He likes all Flowers, except Poppies, which he hates.
  • He likes all Foraged Minerals.
  • Harvey likes all Fruit Tree Fruits, including Bananas and Mangos.
  • He likes all Gems, except Prismatic Shards, which he loves.
  • He likes all Vegetables, except Hops, Tea Leaves, and Wheat, toward which he is neutral, and Unmilled Rice, which he dislikes.
  • Harvey also likes Life Elixir and Maple Syrup.

Neutral

To give you a break, this section’s pretty easy. Harvey specifically is neutral toward any sized Cow’s Milk and all eggs except Duck Eggs, which he likes, and Void eggs, which he dislikes. He is also neutral toward Clams, Fried Eggs, Hops, Roe, Squid Ink, Sweet Gem Berries, Tea Leaves, Truffles (despite loving Truffle Oil), Wheat, and Wool.

Dislikes

This one’s rough, but important to remember. Here’s all of Harvey’s dislikes:

  • Harvey dislikes quite a few Cooked Dishes and other food items, as mentioned previously; he dislikes Blueberry Tarts, Bread, Cheese, Chocolate Cake, Cookies, Cranberry Sauce, Fried Mushrooms, Glazed Yams, Goat Cheese, Hashbrowns, Ice Cream, Pancakes, Pink Cake, Pizza, Rhubarb Pie, and Rice Pudding.
  • He dislikes all Building Materials, i.e. Battery Packs, Clay, Fiber, Hardwood, Stone, and Wood.
  • He dislikes all Artifacts, Bombs, Crafted Floors and Paths, Fences, and Fertilizer.
  • Harvey dislikes all Fish, except Clam, about which he is neutral; and Carp and Snails, which he hates.
  • He dislikes all Geode Minerals and all Geodes.
  • He dislikes all Seeds, including Fruit Tree Saplings, Tea Saplings, Acorns, Maple Seeds, and Pine Cones.
  • Harvey dislikes all Sprinklers and Tackle, and all Mined or Metal Goods.
  • He also dislikes Bone Fragments, Cinder Shards, Cave Carrots, Driftwood, Field Snacks, Jack-O-Lanterns, Oak Resin, Oil, Pine Tar, Qi Fruit, Rice, Solar Essence, Tea Sets, Unmilled Rice, Void Eggs, Void Essence, and Wheat Flour.

Hates

This list is absolutely crucial to commit to memory; any of these items will decrease Friendship with Harvey by 40 points, and even more when multipliers apply.

Harvey specifically hates Coral, Nautilus Shells, Rainbow Shells, Salmonberries, and Spice Berries. He also adheres to the Universal Hates list with a few exceptions, which includes the following:

  • Harvey hates all Bait, Fossils, and Monster Loot, except Solar Essence and Void Essence, which he dislikes.
  • He hates all Trash, except Driftwood, which he dislikes.
  • He also hates Artifact Troves, Bug Steaks, Carp, Crab Pots, Dragon Teeth, Drum Blocks, Energy Tonics, Error Items, Explosive Ammo, Fairy Dust, Flute Blocks, Grass Starters, Green Algae, Golden Coconuts, Hay, all Journal Scraps, Monster Musk, Muscle Remedy, Oil of Garlic, Poppies, Qi Seasoning, Radioactive Ore and Bars, Red Mushrooms, Sap, Sea Urchins, Seafoam Pudding, all Secret Notes, all Slime Eggs, Snails, Strange Buns, Sugar, all varieties of Totems, Torches, Treasure Chests, Void Mayonnaise, and White Algae. Whew!

A Note on Gifting Multipliers

There are two factors that will affect the effect your gift has on the recipient: Special occasions and quality. If the gift you’re giving is one that can be assigned a quality, i.e. silver, gold, or iridium, this quality will boost the effect of the gift, whether positive or negative. It multiplies as follows:

  • Normal = x1 multiplier, +0% effect
  • Silver = x1.1 multiplier, +10% effect
  • Gold = x1.25 multiplier, +25% effect
  • Iridium = x1.5 multiplier, +50% effect

Special occasions include the Festival of the Winter Star and birthdays. When gifting your “Secret Friend” an item at the Festival of the Winter Star, the special occasion will provide an x5 multiplier on the points earned from the gift. Birthdays provide an x8 multiplier.

As an example, if you’re giving Harvey an iridium quality Coral, which he hates, it will cost you -60 friendship points instead of the usual -40. Doing so on the Festival of the Winter Star will cost you a painful -300 points. This can be used to your advantage, however; give Harvey an iridium quality bottle of Wine on his birthday, Winter 14, for a whopping 960 friendship points, nearly four hearts for a single gift.

How to Marry Harvey

how to marry harvey stardew valley

Just like in real life, marriage in Stardew Valley is achieved by showering your intended lover with gifts in order to raise their friendship rating, measured in hearts. Once you’ve reached an adequate friendship level, you’ll propose a courtship with the gift of a bouquet, then propose with an elusive Mermaid’s Pendant and be married three days later. Every young farmer’s dream come true…

To marry Harvey, you will need to get him to ten hearts of friendship, a total of 2,500 friendship points. These points are easily earned if you know where to look for them; simply follow our friendship guide above. In order to actually seal the deal and get married, you’ll need at least one farmhouse upgrade so Harvey will have some space to sleep. This can be accomplished by purchasing the upgrade from Robin.

On top of all this, you’ll also need to see all of your intended’s Heart Events, all listed below, in order to marry them. Once you’ve reached the 8 Heart Event, you’ll need to buy a Bouquet from Pierre’s to show him you’re serious. The shop will begin to sell these after you get any bachelor or bachelorette to eight hearts. Simply purchase one and bring it to Harvey to show your commitment. This will not count as one of your gifts for the week.

To actually marry Harvey, you’ll need to purchase a Mermaid’s Pendant as a sign of true love. This can be done by speaking with the Old Mariner on any rainy day at the beach, across the small wooden bridge. You’ll need to repair it with 300 Wood before you can reach this area. The Old Mariner will sell you a Pendant, and from there, there’s nothing left to do but pop the question.

Once you propose, you’ll be married three days later, and Harvey will move into the farmhouse.

Should You Marry Harvey?

In marriage, Harvey is a caring, loyal, honest husband who does his best to help you with the farm chores; he might feed your animals, mend broken fences, water crops, or even manage to make you a healthy breakfast to start your day off right.

Harvey’s Heart Events

Heart Events are cutscenes that occur once you reach a certain number of hearts with a bachelor or bachelorette. Heart Events occur as milestones for friendship with all villagers, but all marriage candidates have a 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 Heart Event, as well as a 14 Heart Event once you’re married. There are certain requirements that must be met in order to complete each event, so let’s take a look at all of Dr. Harvey’s Heart Events to make sure you’ll be in the right place at the right time.

2 Heart Event

To trigger this event, enter George’s house any time that George is there.

You walk into George’s house to find Dr. Harvey performing a check-up on the elderly man. They are discussing Harvey‘s concerns about George’s health, and George does not seem pleased that Harvey is suggesting he make some changes to his diet and lifestyle in order to stay healthy. The doctor sees you enter, and tells you that these check-ups are intended to be confidential, but George asks you for your opinion on the matter since you have overheard the situation. You are presented with the following options:

The first option will earn you 40 friendship points with Harvey, while the second will lose you 40 points with him. Neither choice affects your friendship with George. The first option will result in Harvey thanking you for your input and George acknowledging that the doctor is right, and that he will work to change his behavior. The second will cause Harvey to become upset with you, and tell George that he will have to tell George’s wife Evelyn about his refusal to change if he doesn’t cooperate, and George, again, begrudgingly accepting Harvey’s advice. Harvey will scold you, and tell you that you shouldn’t give patients mixed messages.

4 Heart Event

To trigger this event, enter the Clinic while Harvey is there.

You enter Dr. Harvey’s Clinic, and he remarks that he was just intending to send you a letter about being due for your annual check-up. Your character will express hesitation, but Harvey will lightheartedly tell you not to be nervous and to follow him. You will both walk to the exam room in the back of the clinic, where Harvey will complete a short exam, culminating in taking your pulse. He’ll remark that it seems high, and you are given the following options as a response:

If you choose the first response, a gentle attempt to flirt with Harvey, he will be utterly oblivious, assume that you mean you’re nervous about being examined by a doctor, and tell you there’s nothing to worry about. This option will earn you 20 points of friendship with him. Choosing the second option will earn 20 friendship points as well, while the third option will lose your 50 points. Regardless of your answer, Harvey will tell you you’re perfectly healthy and gently warn you not to overwork yourself on the farm.

6 Heart Event

To trigger this event, enter Pierre’s General Store any day between 11 AM and 3 PM. (Note: Though Caroline only hosts an aerobics class on Tuesdays, this event will trigger regardless of the day of the week.)

You enter Pierre’s store and, like every Tuesday, Caroline is running a dance aerobics class with some of the other ladies of the town. In the back of the class, you’re surprised to find Dr. Harvey, struggling to keep up. He’s out of breath and a little behind, but he knows the moves; this isn’t his first time here. The class ends, and when Harvey walks to the door to leave, he is startled to see you standing there. He’s horrified that someone has witnessed him, as he intended for this extracurricular activity to be a secret (seemingly unmoved by the fact that the rest of the class comprises about a third of the town’s population), and begs you not to tell anyone. You’re presented with the following options:

Stardew Valley Harvey heart events

The first option will earn you 20 friendship points with him, while the second will lose you 50 points with him. If you choose to keep Harvey’s secret, he will tell you he appreciates you. If you tell him of your intent to blab, he will frown and say you’re rude.

8 Heart Event

You walk into Harvey‘s apartment and find him using his personal ham radio to attempt to communicate with pilots flying overhead. You see him make contact with one, apparently having never done so before, and he is flustered and blushing. You have the option to pretend everything is normal or ask him why he’s so worked up, neither of which will affect your friendship with him. Either way, he’ll express excitement about what has just transpired and invite you to look out the window at the plane whose pilot he was just speaking to. He’ll tell you about his childhood dream of becoming a pilot himself, thwarted by his crippling fear of heights and his poor vision. Harvey remarks that not everyone is meant to follow their dreams and that he’s happy serving his community as a doctor. He then invites you to take a look at his new model plane, thrilled to share his passion with someone he cares about.

10 Heart Event

The day after you reach 10 hearts of friendship, you’ll receive a letter in the mail inviting you to the railroad tracks, where Harvey says he has a surprise for you. If you choose to go, you’ll find him with a rented hot air balloon he says he hired for you. Though you might be concerned about his fear of heights conflicting with this particular activity, he will assure you that because he’s with you, he feels like he can handle it. You take off and he immediately begins to freak out, but eventually relaxes. Harvey hesitantly peers out of the basket at the town below and marvels at the view, blushing and murmuring how happy he is to be here with you. He comments that the two-hour rental time is nearly up, but he appears not to care as he kisses you.

14 Heart Event

You enter your home and find your husband in the kitchen, cooking dinner. He wanted to surprise you after the long day you must’ve had. You sit at the table and enjoy the dish, pasta with clams, and Harvey asks you various questions about your day. None of your responses will impact your friendship; he’s just happy to hear about what you’ve been up to. When you finish eating, he will tell you how lucky he feels to be married to you.

A Note on Friendship Decay

An important thing to remember while going about your daily activities is that your friendship with the other villagers in Stardew Valley will decay if you go a day without speaking to them. In Sam’s case specifically, if you are not officially dating yet, meaning you have not given Sam a bouquet to initiate a courtship, going a day without speaking to him will cause a friendship decay of -2 points per day. If you have given him a bouquet, the decay will increase to -10 points per day. Once married, the decay that occurs if you skip a day without speaking to your spouse is a whopping -20 points per day, so be certain to chat with your spouse before you head off to start your farm chores.

Harvey’s Quests

Like several of the other marriage candidates in Stardew Valley, the only quest that Harvey will ever be involved in is an occasional request he may post to the “Help Wanted” board in the middle of Pelican Town. His request will be for a random item, and the reward for bringing it to him will be three times the amount of gold the item is worth and 150 friendship points with Harvey.

Phew, that’s a wrap on our Harvey character guide for Stardew Valley! Hopefully you learned a thing or two about Pelican Town’s most beloved doctor. Happy farming!
