A game trying to be both expansive and realistic is a difficult feat, but some developers try their hardest to make it happen. That seems to be the idea with Starfield, which is pulling out all the stops when it comes to crafting a lived-in universe. While it is ticking many boxes on the exploration angle, some believe that the social angle is lacking — particularly in the romance department. News has broken about how many romance candidates in the game, and some fans are left a bit worried. While Starfield will have a vast universe to explore and many characters to meet, you’ll only be able to romance just a few of them.

As September gets closer, people are already marking out parts of their calendars for playing through Starfield. You could spend all your time exploring space or meeting all the different creatures and characters. That being said, you won’t be able to romance anyone you want.

According to Twinfinite, the game’s romance options will be extremely limited, despite the vastness of everything else. The main character will certainly have an in-depth story to follow which also incorporates their social relationships. However, there are only four non-player characters eligible for romance. Fans themselves are not sure how to take it. While the options are fewer than other sci-fi RPGs, many fans don’t expect much romance at all from Bethesda games, at least according to commenters on Reddit.

Romantic elements in games are usually either intertwined with the main story or a subplot of sorts. Games like Mass Effect have received praise for how they’ve handled the romance aspect, while others like Fable have been criticized for lack of detail. Either way, the prospect of romance is an appealing one since it gives insight into the main character as well as the person that they select for their partner.

With how few partners there will be in Starfield, one can only hope that the writers are giving each of the romances their due diligence. And, on the flip side, fans can only hope that one of these four romanceable characters are to their liking.

Exploration has been the main aspect of Starfield in most previews, but now the writing and social aspect are getting a closer look. Though not everyone will be pleased with the lower amount of romance options for the protagonist, it does at least give more room for each love story to stand on its own.
